  1. 6. Viral vectors, in innate and adaptive immunity

    Författare :Tanja I Näslund; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :;

    Sammanfattning : Recombinant viral vectors and DNA vectors induce strong immune responses in animal models. However, in clinical trials, the generation of immune responses is less robust, suggesting that further optimization and a deeper understanding of nucleic acid-based vaccines are required. LÄS MER

  2. 7. Tolerance and Immunity: Opposite Outcomes of Microbial Antigen Stimulation

    Författare :Lena Eroukhmanoff; Immunologi; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; TLR2; Tolerance; quinoline-3-carboxamide; Anergy; Foxp3; iNOS; IFN-β; CD4 splenic DCs;

    Sammanfattning : The immune system is remarkable in many ways. It exerts immunity to defend us from foreign pathogens, while it is also responsible for maintaining tolerance to avoid autoimmune diseases and allergy. This thesis includes three separate papers concerning both tolerance and immunity. LÄS MER

  3. 8. Molecular determinants of disease severity in urinary tract infection

    Författare :Ines Ambite; immunologi och glykobiologi - MIG Avdelningen för mikrobiologi; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Asymptomatic bacteriuria; urinary tract infection; acute pyelonephritis; cystitis; Escherichia coli 83972; host response; NlpD; RNA Polymerase II; transcription regulation; inflammasome; Il-1β; ASC; NLRP-3; hyper-inflammatory disorder; MMP-7; IL-1RA; genetic susceptibility; IRF-7; siRNA therapy; P fimbriae; type 1 fimbriae;

    Sammanfattning : In the urinary tract, Escherichia coli infection may result in life-threatening disease, or asymptomatic bacterial carriage, comparable to bacterial commensalism in the gut. Pathogenic strains trigger a disease provoking host response which differs depending on the infected organ. LÄS MER

  4. 9. Role of SOCS proteins during mycobacterial infections

    Författare :Berit Carow; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :;

    Sammanfattning : Mycobacterium tuberculosis is the world’s most successful bacterial killer. During infection, mycobacteria reside inside host cells encapsulated within a granuloma structure in the latent, asymptomatic phase of infection. Only 10% of latently infected develop active, infectious tuberculosis months or years after the initial infection. LÄS MER

  5. 10. Effects of Complement Opsonization of HIV on Dendritic Cells : and Implications for the Immune Response

    Författare :Rada Ellegård; Marie Larsson; Jorma Hinkula; Johan D Söderholm; William Paxton; Linköpings universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; HIV; dendritic cells; complement; innate immune response; TLR signaling; T cell activation; NK cells; inflammation; antiviral response; immune evasion;

    Sammanfattning : Dendritic cells are key players during HIV pathogenesis, and shape both the immediate immune response at the site of infection as well as directing the adaptive immune response against the virus. HIV has developed a plethora of immune evasion mechanisms that hijack dendritic cell functions, suppressing their ability to mount an accurate immune response and exploiting them for efficient viral transfer to target T cells.
