1. Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) for the treatment of cardiogenic shock : identification of pre-implant outcome predictors
Sammanfattning : Background: Refractory cardiogenic shock (RCS), cardiac arrest (CA) and postarrest cardiogenic shock (CS) are associated with high mortality. Venoarterial extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (VA-ECMO) is increasingly used and can offer acute cardiopulmonary life support in this critically ill population but selection of VA-ECMO candidates remains challenging. 2. Coagulation during and after cardiopulmonary bypass with focus on heparin, protamine, aprotinin and platelet function
Sammanfattning : Background: Heparin and protamine dosing for anticoagulation during cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) and its reversal after CPB, respectively, is usually given according to body weight. Excess protamine may impair coagulation. The HeProCalc algorithm calculates heparin and protamine doses during the procedure. LÄS MER
3. Malpositioned and dislocated intraocular lenses : management, complications and surgical repositioning
Sammanfattning : Cataract surgery (exchange of the non-transparent crystalline lens with an IOL) is the most frequent surgery in Sweden, accounting for more than 130000 surgeries per year. Therefore, complications associated with cataract surgery affect a significant number of patients. LÄS MER
4. Strengthening the global surgical workforce: Aspects of access, migration and quality
Sammanfattning : Background. Over five billion people worldwide lack access to safe and affordable surgery and anesthesia care when required. There is a critical unmet need for surgical care, especially in low-income and middle-income countries (LMICs). LÄS MER
5. Measures to prevent microembolization in cardiac surgery and during angiography with special reference to carbon dioxide
Sammanfattning : Background: Cardiovascular interventions including open heart surgery using cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) and coronary angiography may introduce air and particulate arterial embolism that may lead to tissue lesions of the brain and other organs. Aims: To assess: if CO2-insufflation of an empty CPB circuit decreases number of gaseous emboli in the prime compared with a conventional CPB circuit, which holds air before fluid priming (Study I); the efficacy of a new mini-diffuser device for CO2 de-airing in a minimally invasive open cardiothoracic wound cavity model and in patients undergoing minimally invasive open aortic valve surgery (Study II); if an extra separate venous reservoir abolishes CO2-insufflation induced hypercapnia and retains sweep gas flow of the oxygenator constant during open heart surgery (Study III); if there is a difference in the incidence of cerebral microemboli when using either the femoral or the radial approach during coronary angiography (Study IV).
