21. Inflammation as a therapeutic target for Alzheimer's disease
Sammanfattning : Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder which is characterised by impairment of memory and learning. The impairment is caused by neuronal death which originates in the parts of the brain that execute memory functions: the entorhinal cortex and hippocampus. LÄS MER
22. Hormonal regulation of liver and tumor growth
Sammanfattning : The aims of this thesis were to investigate the regulatory functions of interleukin-6 (IL-6) and tumor necrosis factor-a (TNF-a) on liver growth, and the importance of hepatocyte growth factor (HGF) and the HGF receptor (Met) for growth of mesenchyme-derived tumors. The studies on different types of liver growth, measured as weight, DNA and protein content, and DNA synthesis, were performed on mice lacking the IL-6 or the TNF receptor-1 gene back-crossed to the C57bl/6 strain. 23. Specific and nonspecific immune mechanisms in human gut : a comparative study of normal and ulcerative colitis intestine
Sammanfattning : The intestine, with its large mucosal surface area, digests and absorbs food nutrients and maintains a beneficial microbial flora in the colon. Local protective immune responses against intestinal pathogens ensure the survival of the individual. These immune reactions are both specific and non-specific in nature. LÄS MER
24. Genetic and immunological studies of experimental arthritis, with emphasis on a novel C-type lectin receptor gene complex
Sammanfattning : Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) is a chronic, systemic autoimmune syndrome primarily affecting peripheral joints. The etiology of RA is largely unknown but complex interactions between genetic and environmental factors contribute to the disease. Arthritis models more or less resembling RA are used to search for clues. LÄS MER
25. The role of the alpha 7 nicotinic acetylcholine receptor in inflammation and brain injury
Sammanfattning : The alpha 7 nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (α7nAChR) are expressed in the nervous system as well as on peripheral immune cells where it participates in the cholinergic anti-inflammatory pathway. Inflammation is a common component in the pathology of many diseases and injuries, including brain damage. LÄS MER
