  1. 1. A role for NK cells in innate immunity against human leishmaniasis

    Författare :Susanne Nylén; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :Leishmania; NK cells; innate immune activation; IFNgamma; vaccine candidates;

    Sammanfattning : Leishmaniasis is a group name for a spectrum of diseases caused by intracellular protozoa belonging to the family Leishmania. The parasites has been widely used as a tool to study the Th1 / Th2 paradigm of resistance and susceptibility in mice. A role of NK cells in leishmaniasis has been implicated, but not fully explored. 2. 2. Immunomodulation in atherosclerosis : impact of Th balance and CD1d-restricted NKT cells

    Författare :Emmanuel Tupin; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :Atherosclerosis; Th1; Th2; CD1; NKT cells; genes transfer; immunomodulation; apoE- - mice; animal models;

    Sammanfattning : Atherosclerosis is a slow and progressive disease consisting of lipid deposition in arterial walls. Studies in both human and experimental animal models have shown the involvement of the immune system in the pathogenesis. LÄS MER

  3. 3. Interferons in antiviral defense and autoimmunity : focus on type 1 diabetes

    Författare :Monica Hultcrantz; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :Type 1 diabetes; interferons; islets of Langerhans; Coxsackievirus; nonobese diabetic mouse;

    Sammanfattning : Type 1 diabetes (T1D) is a disease characterized by the loss of insulin producing beta-cells in the pancreatic islets of Langerhans. Interferons (IFNs), produced by immune cells and infected parenchymal cells, may be protective or damaging in the pathogenesis of T1D. LÄS MER

  4. 4. T lymphocyte and NK cell function in pulmonary inflammation in sarcoidosis

    Författare :Kianoosh Katchar; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :T lymphocytes; cytokines; activation markers; chemokine receptors; T regulatory cells; sarcoidosis.;

    Sammanfattning : The focus of this thesis is on the role of T lymphocytes and Natural Killer cells in sarcoidosis, which is an inflammatory interstitial pulmonary disorder of unknown etiology. An accumulation of CD4+ T helper cells in the lungs is a characteristic feature of this disease. LÄS MER

  5. 5. Interferons in immunity to chlamydia pneumoniae

    Författare :Antonio Carlos Gigliotti (Tony) Rothfuchs; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :Chlamydia pneumoniae; TLR; IFN-alpha beta; IFN-gamma; macrophages; T cells;

    Sammanfattning : The cytokine IFN-gamma is the architect behind an amazing immunological program of host resistance to intracellular bacterial and protozoan infections. IFN-gamma activates macrophages, making them into inhospitable habitats for parasites attempting to grow inside them. LÄS MER
