1. Tolerance and Immunity: Opposite Outcomes of Microbial Antigen Stimulation
Sammanfattning : The immune system is remarkable in many ways. It exerts immunity to defend us from foreign pathogens, while it is also responsible for maintaining tolerance to avoid autoimmune diseases and allergy. This thesis includes three separate papers concerning both tolerance and immunity. LÄS MER
2. Immuno-regulatory dynamics of non-structural protein 1 of avian influenza A viruses : IFN-β, NF-κB and AP-1 perspectives
Sammanfattning : The type I interferon (IFN-α/β) system represents the first line of defense against influenza A viruses, and is mainly mediated by the interferon regulatory factors 3/7 (IRF3/7), nuclear factor kappa B (NF-κB) and activator protein 1 (AP-1) transcription factors. Therefore, the non-structural protein 1 (NS1) of influenza A viruses has intrinsic abilities to disarm the host cell IFN system, and as a consequence is deeply connected to influenza virus pathogenicity and virulence. 3. Role of classical pro- and anti-inflammatory mediators in ischemic stroke. Beyond neuroimmunomodulation
Sammanfattning : Stroke is a leading cause of death and long-term neurological deficits worldwide, and no effective treatment is available for the vast majority of the stroke patients. A rapid and persistent activation of multiple and dynamic inflammatory and immune cascades, in and outside the brain, occurs after stroke. LÄS MER
4. HLA genetics in multiple sclerosis
Sammanfattning : Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a chronic disease in which both genetic and environmental risk factors contribute to disease susceptibility. MS patients suffer from inflammatory lesions in the central nervous system which results in demyelination of nerve cells, reduced neuronal activity and finally neurodegeneration. LÄS MER
5. Initiation of Autoimmunity in Experimental Autoimmune Encephalomyelitis
Sammanfattning : The events that trigger an autoimmune disease remain largely unknown. To study these events animal models are necessary because symptoms of autoimmune diseases are preceded by a long asymptomatic period in humans. LÄS MER
