1. In vitro Studies of β-cell Death and Survival. Modulation by Adenoviral Vectors and Bcl-2 Overexpression
Sammanfattning : Type 1 diabetes is a multifactorial disease resulting from the selective destruction of insulin-producing β-cells within the pancreatic islets of Langerhans. The mechanisms of β-cell death are not fully understood but cytokines are important mediators of this process. LÄS MER
2. Systemic and local regulation of experimental arthritis by IFN-α, dendritic cells and uridine
Sammanfattning : In this thesis, we have studied the immunological processes of joint inflammation that may be targets for future treatment of patients with arthritis. We focus on the immune-modulating properties of interferon-α (IFN-α) and uridine in experimental arthritis. LÄS MER
3. Mechanisms of Interferon-α Induction in Systemic Lupus Erythematosus
Sammanfattning : Patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) have an activated type I interferon (IFN) system with an ongoing IFN-α synthesis. This may be caused by circulating immune complexes, consisting of anti-DNA antibodies (Abs) and DNA, with IFN-α inducing capacity. LÄS MER
4. Endogenous Type I Interferon Inducers in Systemic Autoimmune Diseases
Sammanfattning : Patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) have elevated levels of interferon (IFN)-α in blood and IFN-α-producing cells in tissues. In the present thesis, we investigate the mechanisms behind the upregulated IFN-α-production in SLE and also show that the IFN-α system is activated in primary Sjögren’s syndrome (pSS), with IFN-α-producing cells in the major affected organ, the salivary glands. 5. Interferon-alpha signaling and cell cycle regulation in neuroendocrine tumors of the digestive system
Sammanfattning : The prognosis for untreated carcinoid patients is poor and their quality of life is low. IFN-α treatment has shown a response rate of 50-80%, however, the antitumor mechanism has not been elucidated. LÄS MER
