  1. 1. Glucose metabolism in patients with exocrine pancreatic adenocarcinoma

    Författare :Johan Permert; Linköpings universitet; []
    Nyckelord :endocrine pancreatic function; euglycemic hyperinsulinemic clamp; exocrine pancreatic adenocarcinoma; glucose metabolism; glyccogen synthesis; hyperglycemic clamp; immunohistochemistry; insulin resistance; insulin secretion; in situ hybridization; islet amuyloid polypeptide IAPP ; radioimmunoassay; subtotal pancreatectomy; MEDICINE; MEDICIN;

    Sammanfattning : Carc.inoma of the exocrine pancreas is the fifth leading cause of cancer death in the Western world and the survival rate is one of the lowest for cancers of any site. Pancreatic cancer is characterized by pronounced, early cachexia and frequent metabolic complications. LÄS MER

  2. 2. Insulin-antagonistic neurohormonal pathways in the development of insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes

    Författare :Martin Lundqvist; Jan W Eriksson; Niclas Abrahamsson; André van Beek; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; glucagon; cortisol; ACTH; growth hormone; counter-regulation; clamp; hypoglycemia; hyperglycemia; obesity; type 2 diabetes; inflammation;

    Sammanfattning : According to the current paradigm, the development of type 2 diabetes is driven by insulin resistance and the gradual failure of beta cells to compensate for this by secreting adequate amounts of insulin. Obesity is an important risk factor for type 2 diabetes and is considered to influence disease development primarily by induction of insulin resistance, via mechanisms that have not been fully elucidated. 3. 3. Melatonin receptors in pancreatic islets - Linking a genetic variant to functional phenotype

    Författare :Cecilia Nagorny; Diabetes - molekylär metabolism; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Melatonin receptor; knock out mice; IVGTT; OGTT; ITT; Hyperinsulinemic clamp; MTNR1B; MT2;

    Sammanfattning : Defective insulin secretion and insulin resistance are the two hallmarks of Type 2 Diabetes (T2D). The pathophysiology of the disease is not fully understood but genetic susceptibility for the disease is a new major player in the understanding of the underlying mechanisms. LÄS MER

  4. 4. The Kidney in Different Stages of the Cardiovascular Continuum

    Författare :Elisabet Nerpin; Johan Ärnlöv; Erik Ingelsson; Ulf Riserus; Jan Östergren; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; epidemiology; chronic kidney disease; cystatin C; glomerular filtration rate; albuminuria; euglycemic hyperinsulinemic clamp; insulin sensitivity; inflammation; oxidative stress; endothelial dysfunction and left ventricular dysfunction; Medicin; Medicine; Nedsatt njurfunktion; insulinresistens; oxidativ stress och utvecklingen av hjärt-kärlsjukdomar;

    Sammanfattning : Patients with chronic kidney disease are at higher risk of developing cardiovascular disease. The complex, interaction between the kidney and the cardiovascular system is incompletely understood, particularly at the early stages of the cardiovascular continuum. LÄS MER

  5. 5. Carotid Vessel Wall Thickness and Echogenicity : In the ULSAM study

    Författare :Martin Wohlin; Lars Lind; Johan Sundström; Samar Basu; Stefan Agewall; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :Medicine; Epidemiology; Medicin;

    Sammanfattning : In this thesis the common carotid artery intima media thickness in nearly 500 elderly men is independently associated with insulin sensitivity, measured by the gold standard hyperinsulinemic euglycemic clamp test (paper 1), to both COX- and cytokine mediated inflammation independently of other markers of inflammation, oxidative stress and antioxidant status (paper 2) and also to the alleles of the apolipoprotein gene independently of lipid levels and cardiovascular risk factors (paper 3). The echogenicity of the carotid intima-media complex measured as grey scale median predicts mortality independently of common carotid artery intima-media thickness, prior cardiovascular disease and cardiovascular risk factors (paper 4).
