    Sammanfattning : This study focuses on how the American poet William Carlos Williams (1883–1963) deals with Europe and tradition in works published between 1917 and 1928 and in unpublished material from the same period. Poems from Al Que Quiere! (1917), Sour Grapes (1921), Kora in Hell (1920) and Spring and All (1923) as well as The Great American Novel (1923) and A Voyage to Pagany (1928) constitute the core of the material. LÄS MER

The analysed primary texts are The Long Journey of Poppie Nongena (1980) by Elsa Joubert, The Calling of Katie Makanya: A Memoir of South Africa (1995) by Margaret McCord, Finding Mr Madini (1999) by Jonathan Morgan and the Great African Spiderwriters, David’s Story (2000) by Zoë Wicomb, and There Was This Goat: Investigating the Truth Commission Testimony of Notrose Nobomvu Konile (2009), co-written by Antjie Krog, Nosisi Mpolweni and Kopano Ratele. The thesis focuses on referential subjects, and addresses the problem of why the possibilities to leave out such subjects have been reduced during the history of Swedish.
