1. Finite element methods for surface problems
Sammanfattning : The purpose of this thesis is to further develop numerical methods for solving surface problems by utilizing tangential calculus and the trace finite element method. Direct computation on the surface is possible by the use of tangential calculus, in contrast to the classical approach of mapping 2D parametric surfaces to 3D surfaces by means of differential geometry operators. 2. Duality-based adaptive finite element methods with application to time-dependent problems
Sammanfattning : To simulate real world problems modeled by differential equations, it is often not sufficient to consider and tackle a single equation. Rather, complex phenomena are modeled by several partial dierential equations that are coupled to each other. LÄS MER
3. First-pass Intestinal Metabolism of Drugs : Experiences from in vitro, in vivo and simulation studies
Sammanfattning : The bioavailability of a drug can be described as the fraction of an orally administered dose that reaches the systemic circulation and is often limited by first-pass metabolism in the gut and the liver. It is important to have knowledge about these processes since the systemic blood drug concentration is tightly connected to the effect of the drug. LÄS MER
4. Identity through the other : Canadian adventure romance for adolescents
Sammanfattning : This study of Canadian adventure romance for adolescents seeks to demonstrate the cultural significance of the genre through close readings of James Houston's Frozen Fire and The White Archer, Monica Hughes's Hunter in the Dark and Ring-Rise, Ring-Set, as well as Markoosie's Harpoon of the Hunter. By means of a semiotic-structuralist approach I examine the texts as a signifying system conveying discourses that constitute a code of connection to the social context of contemporary young-adult readers. 5. Optical remote sensing of industrial gas emission fluxes
Sammanfattning : Mobile optical remote sensing techniques offer promising possibilities to quantify and geographically attribute local industrial gaseous emissions to the atmosphere. Studies have shown that such emissions are often poorly understood, underestimated, and thereby not properly accounted for in emission inventories and regional atmospheric chemistry models, especially for emissions of VOCs.
