  1. 1. Gradation-Based Framework for Asphalt Mixtures

    Författare :Bernardita Francisca Lira Miranda; Björn Birgisson; Terhi Pellinen; KTH; []
    Nyckelord :TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Asphalt; aggregate gradation; packing theory; asphalt microstructure; porosity; film thickness; rutting; moisture damage.; SRA - Transport; SRA - Transport;

    Sammanfattning : Asphalt mixture microstructure is formed by aggregates, bitumen binder and air voids. Aggregates make for up to 90% of the mixtures volume and the structure formed by them will depend mostly on their size distribution and shape. LÄS MER

  2. 2. Towards the enhanced applicability of cold mix asphalt: : An experimental study focusing on surface free energies and the breaking and coalescence of bitumen emulsions

    Författare :Abdullah Khan; Nicole Kringos; Per Redelius; Andreas Loizos; KTH; []
    Nyckelord :Bitumen; Cold Asphalt Mixtures; Minerals Aggregates; Surface Free Energy; Sorption; Contact Angle; Bitumen Emulsions; Breaking and Coalescence; Emulsifiers; Adhesion Promoters.; Bitumen; kallblandad asfalt; mineraler aggregat; fri ytenergi; sorption; kontaktvinkel; Bitumenemulsioner; brytning och koalescensen; emulgatorer; adhesionsegenskaper; Byggvetenskap; Civil and Architectural Engineering;

    Sammanfattning : The environmental, social and economic sustainability of our infrastructure network is clearly of paramount importance to the road-engineering sector as well to society at large. Sustainable road materials and reduced transport of those materials therefore play a significant role. LÄS MER

  3. 3. Mechanics-based Design Framework for Flexible Pavements

    Författare :Yared H. Dinegdae; Björn Birgisson; David Newcomb; KTH; []
    Nyckelord :TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Mechanics-based; asphalt; fatigue; reliability; traffic; variability; Mekanik-baserade; utmattningssprickor; pålitlighet; lastbilstrafiken; variabilitet; Byggvetenskap; Civil and Architectural Engineering;

    Sammanfattning : Load induced top-down fatigue cracking has been recognized recently as a major distress phenomenon in asphalt pavements. This paper presents a mechanics-based design framework in load and resistance factor design (LRFD) format for the top-down fatigue cracking performance evaluation of flexible pavements. LÄS MER

  4. 4. Development of a Morphology-based Analysis Framework for Asphalt Pavements

    Författare :Ibrahim Onifade; Björn Birgisson; Nicole Kringos; Denis Jelagin; William G. Buttlar; KTH; []
    Nyckelord :TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Morphology; damage; X-ray computed tomography; top-down cracking; fracture; Morfologi; skador; röntgendatortomografi; ’top-down’sprickbildning; fraktur; Byggvetenskap; Civil and Architectural Engineering; Teknisk materialvetenskap; Materials Science and Engineering;

    Sammanfattning : The morphology of asphalt mixtures plays a vital role in their properties and behaviour. The work in this thesis is aimed at developing a fundamental understanding of the effect of the asphalt morphology on the strength properties and deformation mechanisms for development of morphology-based analysis framework for long-term response prediction. 5. 5. Mechanisms of Blister Formation on Concrete Bridge Decks with Waterprooving Asphalt Pavement Systems

    Författare :Biruk Wobeshet Hailesilassie; Björn Birgisson; Lars-Olof Nilsson; KTH; []
    Nyckelord :TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; blister growth; PBM waterproofing membrane; orthotropic material; biaxial test; peeling test; elliptical blister growth;

    Sammanfattning : Bridge decks are commonly subjected to harsh environmental conditions that often lead to serious corrosion problems triggered by blisters under the hot mix asphalt bridge deck surfacing and secretly evolving during weather exposure until damage is often detected too late. Blisters may form under both the waterproofing dense mastic asphalt layer or under the waterproofing membrane which is often applied as additional water protection under the mastic asphalt (MA).
