1. Novel insights into the role of serotonin in control of β-cell fuction
Sammanfattning : Inadequate insulin secretion is a central component in the development of Diabetes Mellitus, resulting from reduced pancreatic β-cell mass, as well as diminished β-cell function. Islet produced 5-hydroxy tryptamine (5-HT) is suggested to regulate insulin secretion and β-cell mass in rodents during pregnancy and in metabolically challenged states. LÄS MER
2. Monoamine transporters in female human reproduction
Sammanfattning : The present study explored the gene and protein expression of the monoamine transporters in human endometrium throughout the menstrual cycle, in early decidua and in placentas from normal as well as preeclamptic pregnancies using in-situ hybridization, real time-PCR, immunohistochemistry and primary tissue cultures. Four distinguishable patterns were observed in the endometrium over the menstrual cycle: (1) epithelial expression of norepinephrine transporter (NET) mRNA, (2) Stromal co- expression of vesicular monoamine transporter 2 (VMAT2) and plasma membrane monoamine transporter (PMAT) mRNAs with maximal intensity in the proliferative phase; (3) increasing epithelial expression of VMAT2 mRNA with a maximum in the late secretory phase; (4) stromal expression of extra-neuronal monoamine transporter (EMT) mRNA with a peak in the early secretory phase. 3. Psychosomatic aspects on diabetes and chronic pain Alexithymia, depression and salivary cortisol The Affect School and Script Analysis Therapy
Sammanfattning : This thesis explores links between psyche and soma in diabetes and in chronic benign pain (CBP). Interventions with Affect School and Script Analysis (ASSA) compared to Basic Body Awareness Therapy (BBAT) are tried. In a feasibility and treatment efficacy study we offered ASSA to 59 patients with CBP, and 54 (92%) completed. LÄS MER
4. Reproductive function in male childhood cancer survivors
Sammanfattning : Childhood cancer (CC) survival rate has increased over the last couple of decades, today approaching 80%. Therefore more attention has been paid to late effects. One important issue for CC survivors (CCS) is impaired reproductive function. LÄS MER
5. The Serotonin Transporter and the Vesicular Monoamine Transporters During Development
Sammanfattning : In the present study, the mRNA encoding the serotonin transporter (5-HTT) and two isoforms of the vesicular monoamine transporters (VMAT1 and VMAT2) have been mapped in the rat throughout gestation and early postnatal development using in situ hybridization, RT PCR and immunohistochemistry. 5-HTT mRNA was found in serotonergic neurons and VMAT2 mRNA in all monoaminergic neurons from early gestation.
