   Sammanfattning : The present study critically examines the zealous building of 470 new parish churches in Sweden in 1850–1890; mainly replacing older churches in Västergötland, Småland and Scania; mainly new sites in Norrland. The primary source material is the church itself, meticulously examined in the fi eld and from archives, comparative analysis, the systemati-sation of formal elements and interpretation of architectural expression, characterisation of locations, plans, interiors and exteriors.    Sammanfattning : In line with the international historical-archaeological discipline, this study aims to increase knowledge of marginalising processes and disenfranchised groups in the past and to contribute to the recognised Swedish need to augment the know-how of researching people ‘of little note’ in urban environments. The study aspires a theoretically engaged empirical alternative for developing new knowledge about urban places which are not possible to excavate or where archaeological data is insufficient, while evincing how digitized historical newspapers can step in as a multifaceted historical- archaeological source.    Sammanfattning : Shrines and Souls provides a multi-layered contextualization of the article on religious liberty in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (Article 18), which was propounded by the United Nations General Assembly on December 10, 1948. It shows how the framers of the Declaration decided to break with some of the conventional ways of framing religious liberty in international law, by foregrounding the inner freedom of thought and conscience instead of the free exercise of religion, by directly recognizing the right to change religion or belief, and by restricting the human rights framework to the rights of individuals.
