1. Wideband THz Mixers and Components for the Next Generation of Receivers for Radioastronomy
Sammanfattning : In recent decades, there has been a growing interest in THz research, leading to substantial improvements in technology and the emergence of new applications. In particular, the ever-evolving field of radio astronomy instrumentation has been pushing the limits of millimeter and sub-millimeter technology boundaries, redefining the state-of-the-art for wideband low-noise receivers. 2. Reconfigurable and Wideband Receiver Components for System-on-Chip Millimetre-Wave Radiometer Front-Ends
Sammanfattning : This thesis presents solutions and studies related to the design of reconfigurable and wideband receiver circuits for system-on-chip (SoC) radiometer front-ends within the millimetre-wave (mm-wave) range. Whereas many of today’s mm-wave front-ends are bulky and costly due to having discrete RF components, single-chip receiver modules could potentially result in a wider use for emerging applications such as wireless communication, short range radar and passive imaging security sensors if realised with adequate performances and at a lower cost. 3. Design and characterisation of terahertz Schottky diode harmonic mixers
Sammanfattning : Efficient, compact, and reliable terahertz frequency converters preferably operating at ambient temperature are crucial for stabilising far-infrared optical sources. This thesis focuses on the design and characterisation of terahertz Schottky diode harmonic mixers for frequency stabilisation of quantum-cascade lasers. LÄS MER
4. Advanced Schottky Diode Receiver Front-Ends for Terahertz Applications
Sammanfattning : This thesis treats the development of high frequency circuits for increased functionality of terahertz receiver front-ends based on room temperature Schottky diode technology. This includes the study of novel circuit integration schemes, packaging concepts as well as new measurement and characterisation techniques. LÄS MER
5. Towards Ultimate Performance of THz Heterodyne Receivers: SIS Frequency Multiplier and Wideband Passive Components
Sammanfattning : This thesis focuses on the development of advanced components for the future wideband side band separating and / or multipixel receivers for radio-astronomy with ultimate sensitivity. In this thesis, a novel frequency multiplier based on distributed superconducting tunnel (SIS) junctions has been demonstrated for the first time, taking advantage of the extreme inherent nonlinearity of such device.
