6. Hormonal regulation of liver and tumor growth
Sammanfattning : The aims of this thesis were to investigate the regulatory functions of interleukin-6 (IL-6) and tumor necrosis factor-a (TNF-a) on liver growth, and the importance of hepatocyte growth factor (HGF) and the HGF receptor (Met) for growth of mesenchyme-derived tumors. The studies on different types of liver growth, measured as weight, DNA and protein content, and DNA synthesis, were performed on mice lacking the IL-6 or the TNF receptor-1 gene back-crossed to the C57bl/6 strain. 7. Hepatocyte transplantation : experimental and clinical studies
Sammanfattning : Hepatocyte transplantation is an experimental treatment for patients with end-stage liver disease and inborn metabolic liver disorders. Studies in animal models and human trials have shown that allogenic hepatocytes infused through the portal vein physiologically integrate into the liver parenchyma, replacing missing liver function. 8. Quantitative evaluation of liver function using gadoxetic acid-enhanced MRI
Sammanfattning : Before liver resection, a reliable and accurate assessment of the liver function is essential to ensure a safe surgery and avoid unfavorable complications such as post-hepatectomy liver failure (PHLF). Gadoxetic acid enhanced magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is a routinely used imaging modality for tumor detection and characterization. LÄS MER
9. Mechanistic analyses of hepatocyte plasticity
Sammanfattning : Adult hepatocytes are highly plastic cells which have a molecular toolbox for efficient regeneration. Yet, end stage liver diseases are becoming an increasing clinical burden. LÄS MER
10. Proteins of the Inter-α-inhibitor Family : Biosynthesis, Plasma Clearance and Interaction with Extracellular Matrix Components
Sammanfattning : Bikunin, a chondroitin sulfate-containing protein of 25 kDa, has protease inhibitory activity and occurs in the plasma in free and complexed form. In inter-α-inhibitor (IαI) and pre-a-inhibitor (PαI) it is covalently linked through its chondroitin sulfate (CS) chain to two or one other polypeptide of about 80 kDa – heavy chains 1 and 2 (H1, H2) and heavy chain 3 (H3) – respectively.
