  1. 1. Alzheimer's disease and dementia with Lewy bodies: Special focus on the role of serpins

    Författare :Henrietta Nielsen; Enheten för kroniska inflammatoriska och degenerativa sjukdomar; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES;

    Sammanfattning : Serine protease inhibitors (Serpins) are involved in the pathogenesis of neurodegenerative dementia, including the two most common types, Alzheimer’s disease (AD) and dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB). The pathological characteristics of AD include senile plaques, mainly composed of aggregated amyloid-beta peptide (Abeta1-42), but also serpins, and neurofibrillary tangles of hyperphosphorylated tau protein. 2. 2. Links between plasma apoE and glucose metabolism, brain insulin signaling, and synaptic integrity : Relevance to Alzheimer’s disease pathophysiology

    Författare :Anna Edlund; Henrietta Nielsen; William Rebeck; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Alzheimer’s disease; apolipoprotein E; insulin; metabolism; Amyloid precursor protein APP ; Fe65; neurokemi med molekylär neurobiologi; Neurochemistry with Molecular Neurobiology;

    Sammanfattning : Human apolipoprotein E (apoE) exists as three main isoforms called apoE2, apoE3, and apoE4, of which the E4 isoform is associated with increased Alzheimer’s disease (AD) risk. Brain glucose hypometabolism, linked to synaptic dysfunction, occurs years before symptom onset in AD, especially in APOEε4-carriers. LÄS MER

  3. 3. Peripheral apolipoprotein E and its emerging role in neurodegenerative disease

    Författare :Andreas Giannisis; Henrietta M. Nielsen; Kim Kultima; Johan Ankarklev; Cheryl Wellington; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Alzheimer’s disease; apolipoprotein E; humanized-liver mice; race; diet; neurokemi med molekylär neurobiologi; Neurochemistry with Molecular Neurobiology;

    Sammanfattning : The human apolipoprotein E gene (APOE) is polymorphic and coding for three common alleles; ε2, ε3, and ε4. Carriers of the ε4 allele are at a higher risk of developing sporadic late-onset Alzheimer’s Disease (AD). This association appears to be influenced by inherited traits, race, and sex. LÄS MER

  4. 4. Apolipoprotein E and alpha-synuclein interactions, and their associations with neurodegenerative diseases

    Författare :Daniel Twohig; Henrietta M. Nielsen; Andreas Barth; Tiago Fleming Outeiro; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; neurokemi med molekylär neurobiologi; Neurochemistry with Molecular Neurobiology;

    Sammanfattning : The apolipoprotein E gene (APOE) is expressed as three major isoforms, APOE ε2, ε3 and ε4 that encode the apoE2, E3 and E4 proteins, respectively. APOE ε4 is associated with an increased risk for age-related neurodegenerative diseases including Alzheimer’s disease (AD) and dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB), and increases the risk of dementia in Parkinson’s disease (PD), however, the exact molecular mechanisms underpinning the associations between APOE ε4 and neurodegeneration are still unknown. 5. 5. Structure and dynamics of amyloid-beta oligomers

    Författare :Faraz Vosough; Andreas Barth; Henrietta Nielsen; Oxana Klementieva; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Alzheimer s disease; amyloid-beta peptide; Aβ oligomer; infrared spectroscopy; FTIR; protein aggregation; β-sheet; interaction; lithium; nickel; biokemi; Biochemistry;

    Sammanfattning : Alzheimer's disease (AD) is the most common cause of dementia, affects tens of millions of people all over the world and inflicts huge socioeconomic costs on the societies. AD is a neurodegenerative disease; it progresses over time and is highly debilitating at the advanced stages. LÄS MER
