1. Improving emergency braking performance of heavy vehicles
Sammanfattning : Previous studies by the Cambridge Vehicle Dynamics Consortium (CVDC) have suggested that, by improving the control bandwidth of conventional Heavy Goods Vehicle(HGV) brake actuators and using a ‘slip control’ braking strategy, HGV stopping distances could be reduced by up to 30% over existing systems. The work covered in this thesis looks to: validate the CVDC’s previous braking performance predictions through Hardware-in-the-Loop (HiL) simulation, investigate how in-plane tyre dynamics may influence such a system’s performance, develop and build a next generation high-bandwidth braking system for vehicle implementation and carry out comparative back-to-back vehicle tests between the new system and commercially available HGV ABS. 2. Active Flow Control for Aircrafts and Heavy Vehicles
Sammanfattning : Bluff-body flows are dominated by large dissipative vortex-shedding wakes with low mean pressure compared to the high pressure on their frontal area. This induced pressure difference is the major contribution to the total aerodynamic drag. LÄS MER
3. Active Flow Control for Drag Reduction of Heavy Vehicles
Sammanfattning : This thesis considers the aerodynamics of trucks. The work focuses on the aerodynamic drag caused by the wake. Bluff-body flows are dominated by large dissipative vortex-shedding wakes with a low mean pressure compared to the high pressure on their frontal area. LÄS MER
4. Capturing steering feel : a step towards implementation of active steering in heavy vehicles

5. Distributed Road Grade Estimation for Heavy Duty Vehicles
Sammanfattning : An increasing need for goods and passenger transportation drives continued worldwide growth in traffic. As traffic increases environmental concerns, traffic safety, and cost efficiency become ever more important. Advancements in microelectronics open the possibility to address these issues through new advanced driver assistance systems. LÄS MER
