1. Roles of Notch signalling in early embryonic development
Sammanfattning : Metazoan embryonic development requires a complex interplay of morphological processes coordinated with self-renewal and differentiation to correctly specify and maintain body cell types in the correct location. Notch signalling is a metazoan specific arbiter of cell fate decision processes, known to control lateral inhibition and asymmetric cell division processes throughout the metazoa and in the development of all metazoan organs. 2. Essays in Institutional and Development Economics
Sammanfattning : Paper 1: "Congo: The Prize of Predation" Abstract: The article analyzes the war against Mobutu (1996-97) and the more recent war (1998- ) in the Democratic Republic of the Congo with particular attention to greed and grievance as motivating factors in these two wars. Whereas the authors' usage of the term "greed" simply reflects the desire to gain control of natural resource rents, they model "grievance" as deliberate institutional differences, implemented by the ruler, between the formal and informal sectors. 3. Molecules and Light : A Journey into the World of Theoretical Spectroscopy
Sammanfattning : Two of the main technological challenges of the century are the production of clean energy, on the one hand, and the development of new materials for electronic and spintronic applications that could increase the speed and the storage capacity of regular electronic devices, on the other hand. Organic materials, including fullerenes, organic polymers and organic molecules with metal centres are promising candidates for low-cost, flexible and clean technologies that can address these challenges. 5. The Landed Municipality : The Underlying Rationales for Swedish Public Landownership and their Implications for Policy
Sammanfattning : This thesis examines the role of public land in housing development in Sweden, focusing on how public authorities perceive their role as landowners, and with what consequences. The thesis is inspired by the work of Doreen Massey and Alejandrina Catalano on different forms of landownership under capitalism, exploring the nature of the relationship between land and landowner when the latter is a public authority.
