21. Molecular, micro- and ultrastructural investigations of labile tissues in deep time
Sammanfattning : This thesis comprises investigations of microstructures and molecular remains, preserved in a variety of fossil specimens. The results are presented in six papers, collectively aiming to thoroughly examine fossil traces of such remains by employing a combination of both established and relatively new analytical methods. 22. Midkine - a host defence protein
Sammanfattning : Every day we encounter many potentially harmful microbes in our environment. The epithelial linings constitute an anatomical barrier protecting us and they also produce antimicrobial polypeptides (AMPs) that act as a chemical barrier. These AMPs are small and positively charged, killing a broad range of microbes rapidly. LÄS MER
23. Functional Organization of Cerebellar Modules Controlling Forelimb Movements: Climbing and Mossy Fibre Input and Motor Output via the Red Nucleus and Motor Cortex
Sammanfattning : A modular organization has recently been described for the cerebellar control system comprising the forelimb areas of the C1/C3/Y zones in the cerebellar cortex and nucleus interpositus anterior (NIA) of the cat. A module is a group of cells in NIA which receives homogenous climbing fibre input via Purkinje cells that belong to the same set of microzones in the C1/C3/Y zones. LÄS MER
24. Neurogenesis and transplantation in stroke-damaged brain
Sammanfattning : Stroke in young adult rodents triggers neurogenesis in the damaged striatum and intact hippocampus. as stroke happens frequently in aged individuals it is of great importance to know whether aging affects brain recovery mechanisms. LÄS MER
25. Adhesion and Friction - a Study on Tactility
Sammanfattning : Although we are surrounded by hundreds of surfaces we can still distinguish them from each other simply by touch. The tactile information, interpreted by our brain and given by our fingers, is precise, but to put words to the sensation is very difficult — is it smooth, sticky or harsh? We do not only perceive surfaces differently, we also describe them in our own way. LÄS MER
