2. The use of peptides for studying molecular events in HIV- and HSV-infections
Sammanfattning : Synthetic peptides were used as tools in order to study various characteristic sof human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and herpes simplex virus (HSV). Peptides were designed as multiple antigenic peptides (MAPs) and used as HIV vaccines in experimental animals. The included HIV epitopes were more immunogenic when immunized as MAPs than as a protein. LÄS MER
3. Interaction of herpes simplex virus with cell surface glycosaminoglycans as a target for antiviral intervention
Sammanfattning : Herpes simplex virus (HSV) infections in humans are predominantly manifested as oral cold sores or genital ulcers. As HSV infects cells by interaction with cell surface heparan sulfate (HS) and/or chondroitin sulfate (CS), the aim of the research work presented in this thesis was to explore the possibility of antiviral intervention with compounds that mimic HS or CS. 4. Anti-herpes simplex virus activities of sulfomannan oligosaccharide PI-88 and disulfated cyclitols
Sammanfattning : Herpes simplex virus (HSV) initiates invasion of human cells by binding to the cell surface heparan sulfate (HS) glycosaminoglycan chains. This step is mediated by the viral envelope glycoproteins gC and/or gB. LÄS MER
5. The discovery of antiviral compounds targeting adenovirus and herpes simplex virus : assessment of synthetic compounds and natural products
Sammanfattning : There is a need for new antiviral drugs. Especially for the treatment of adenovirus infections, since no approved anti-adenoviral drugs are available. Adenovirus infections in healthy persons are most often associated with respiratory disease, diarrhea and infections of the eye. These infections can be severe, but are most often self-limiting.
