6. Alcohol, sickness absence and disability pension : a study in the field of disease, ill health, psychosocial factors, and medicalisation
Sammanfattning : In Sweden 1998 there were 34 487 newly granted DPs (disability pensions) irrespective of diagnosis and 466 (1.4 %) with a main diagnosis of alcohol dependence or abuse. Other studies have shown that alcohol diagnoses are underestimated on certificates for disability pension. LÄS MER
7. Analysis of inherited and somatic variants to decipher canine complex traits
Sammanfattning : This thesis presents several investigations of the dog as a model for complex diseases, focusing on cancers and the effect of genetic risk factors on clinical presentation. In Papers I and II, we performed genome-wide association studies (GWAS) to identify germline risk factors predisposing US golden retrievers to hemangiosarcoma (HSA) and B-cell lymphoma (BLSA). 8. Exploring molecular interactions between polypeptide conjugates and protein targets : Manipulating affinity by chemical modifications
Sammanfattning : In this thesis molecular interactions between polypeptide conjugates and protein targets were investigated. Polypeptides were derivatized with small organic molecules, peptides and oligonucleotides. New strategies were developed with the aim to increase affinities for proteins of biological interest. 9. Fighting isoaspartate
Sammanfattning : Isoaspartate (IsoAsp) is a damaging amino acid residue generated either from asparagine (Asn) deamidation or aspartate (Asp) isomerization. Both reactions are spontaneous in physiological conditions and require no enzymes. In isoAsp, a CH2 group is rearranged from the side chain and extends the polypeptide backbone. LÄS MER
10. Evasion and Attack: Structural Studies of a Bacterial Albumin-binding Protein and of a Cephalosporin Biosynthetic Enzyme
Sammanfattning : This thesis describes the crystal structures of two proteins in the context of combatting bacterial infections. The GA module is a bacterial albumin-binding domain from a surface protein expressed by pathogenic strains of the human commensal bacterium Finegoldia magna. LÄS MER
