  1. 1. Plant-produced STI vaccine antigens with special emphasis on HIV-1 p24

    Författare :Ingrid Lindh; Åke Strid; Sören Andersson; Edward Rybicki; Örebro universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Plant-based vaccines; Arabidopsis thaliana; HIV-1; p24; GALT; mucosal immunity; Chlamydia trachomatis; MOMP; Daucus carota; Chemistry; Kemi; Chemistry; Kemi;

    Sammanfattning : Objective: To establish stable transgenic non-toxic plants as a platform for plant-based vaccine production as well as potential oral delivery system of vaccine antigens for sexually transmitted infections (STIs). The concept is to immunize the mucosal immune system present in the gut-associated lymphoid tissues (GALT). LÄS MER

  2. 2. Enhancement of HIV-1 DNA immunogens

    Författare :Anne Kjerrström Zuber; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :HIV-1; DNA vaccination; regulatory genes; adjuvants; experimental HIV-1 model;

    Sammanfattning : Human immunodeficiency virus type 1 eludes control by the immune response through a high degree of variability and immune escape mechanisms. Induction of a broad specific immune response is important to clear virus-infected cells. LÄS MER

  3. 3. Studies on HIV-1 core assembly

    Författare :Samir Abdurahman; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :HIV-1; mutation; capsid; p24; capsid assembly; alpha-HGA; antiviral;

    Sammanfattning : The main objective of this thesis was to define the roles of Gag (p55), in particular, the capsid (CA, p24) protein in human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) particle assembly. More specifically, i) to determine the relative contribution of some specific residues and/or sequences in HIV-1 CA core assembly and virus release, ii) to characterize the importance of two conserved residues with quite opposing intra-molecular contacts with other CA residues in capsid assembly, iii) to define the role and significance of a specific amino acid involved in formation of a conserved β-hairpin structure in HIV-1 capsid assembly, and iv) to define the active antiviral metabolite of an antiviral tripeptide amide previously found to affect HIV-1 capsid assembly and infectivity. 4. 4. The effect of alpha-HGA on HIV-1 replication

    Författare :Masoud Youssefi; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :HIV-1; p24; capsid formation; alpha-HGA; antiretroviral; uptake;

    Sammanfattning : Different classes of anti HIV-1 drugs are now available for treatment of HIV-1 infection. Although improved, these drugs show adverse effects and their long-term efficiency is severely hampered by the emergence of resistant viruses. Therefore, less toxic and more effective anti HIV-1 therapeutics agents are still needed. LÄS MER

  5. 5. On the role of dendritic cells in HIV-1 infection

    Författare :Anna Smed Sörensen; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :Dendritic cell; plasmacytoid; myeloid; HIV-1; cytokines; co-stimulation; transmission; antigen presentation; apoptotic cells; MuLV;

    Sammanfattning : Dendritic cells (DCs) are antigen-presenting cells with the capacity to initiate primary T cell responses against pathogens such as HIV-1. In addition, DCs express the receptors required for HIV-1 infection and as DCs are prevalent in the mucosa, they encounter the virus early after sexual transmission. LÄS MER
