  1. 1. Reproductive toxicology of endocrine disruptors : effects of cadmium, phthalates and phytoestrogens on testicular steroidogenesis

    Författare :David Gunnarsson; Gunnar Selstam; Gunnar Nordberg; Per Leffler; Henrik Leffers; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Endocrine disruptors; reproductive toxicology; cadmium; phthalates; DEHP; MEHP; phytoestrogens; steroidogenesis; testosterone; Leydig cell; Molecular biology; Molekylärbiologi;

    Sammanfattning : A number of investigations during the last two decades describe adverse trends in male reproductive health, which have been proposed to be caused by environmental factors with endocrine disrupting properties. In contrast to many other toxicants, endocrine disruptors often do not show linear dose-response relationships typical of those found in traditional toxicological studies. LÄS MER

  2. 2. Arsenic Influences Virus Replication in Experimental Coxsackievirus B3 Infection

    Författare :Ylva Molin; Nils-Gunnar Ilbäck; Eva Hjelm; Göran Friman; Jonas Blomberg; Gunnar Nordberg; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; coxsackievirus B3; trace elements; arsenic; selenium; virology; IFN-γ; NFκB; Infectious diseases; Infektionssjukdomar; Infectious Diseases; Infektionssjukdomar;

    Sammanfattning : Trace elements are essential for the host defence against infections, and during common infections, the balance of trace elements is changed in serum and tissues. Supplementation with selenium (Se), an essential trace element, is known to decrease the severity of coxsackievirus B3 (CVB3) infection in mice. LÄS MER

  3. 3. Priority setting strategies for regulatory testing of industrial chemicals

    Författare :Anna Nordberg; Christina Rudén; Sven Ove Hansson; Nils Gunnar Lindquist; KTH; []
    Nyckelord :HUMANIORA; HUMANITIES; risk assessment; risk management; regulatory toxicology; test strategies; prioritisation; REACH; industrial chemicals; History of technology and industry; Teknik- och industrihistoria;

    Sammanfattning : For the majority of the estimated 70,000 industrial chemical substances available on the European market today there is not enough information to enable a reasonably complete assessment of the risks that they might pose to man and the environment. Any strategy for the generation of additional data for these substances should aim at making testing as efficient as possible taking into account environmental and health protection, time, monetary cost and animal welfare. 4. 4. Prenatal Arsenic Exposure and Consequences for Pregnancy Outcome and Infant Health : Epidemiological Studies in Bangladesh

    Författare :Anisur Rahman; Lars-Åke Persson; Eva-Charlotte Ekström; Marie Vahter; Gunnar Nordberg; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :arsenic; groundwater; foetal loss; birth weight; lower respiratory tract infection; diarrhoeal diseases; infant mortality; cohort; Bangladesh; MEDICINE; MEDICIN; Medicine; medicin;

    Sammanfattning : The aim of this thesis was to analyse possible effects of prenatal arsenic exposure on foetal and infant health. The setting is Bangladesh, where two cohorts were studied, both part of a health and demographic surveillance system in Matlab. LÄS MER

  5. 5. Office work and physical factors : health aspects of electromagnetic fields and light

    Författare :Monica Sandström; Kjell Hansson Mild; Gunnar Nordberg; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Facial skin symptoms; office illness; electrical hypersensitivity; physical environment; flicker; jitter; neurophysiological effects;

    Sammanfattning : The overall aim of this thesis is to increase our knowledge of the physical environment of office workers with special focus on electromagnetic fields and to address the question of whether electromagnetic fields can directly or indirectly contribute to symptoms or discomfort among video display terminal ( VDT) workers. Furthermore, we have measured light modulation from various commonly used light sources in laboratory conditions and, as a second step, used modulated light as stimulus for provocation of neurophysiological responses in persons with perceived “electrical hypersensitivity” (EHS).
