1. Nutrient Limitation of Bacterial Growth in Soil
Sammanfattning : Lack of carbon has been assumed to be the most common limiting factor for bacterial growth in soil, although there are reports of limitation by nitrogen and phosphorus. I have studied nutrient limitation of bacterial growth in soil using a novel technique, where thymidine or leucine incorporation is used to detect changes in growth rates after adding nutrients. 2. Metapopulation and metacommunity processes, dispersal strategies and life-history trade-offs in epiphytes
Sammanfattning : The aim of this thesis was to increase knowledge about metapopulation and metacommunity processes in patchy, dynamic landscapes, using epiphytic bryophytes as a model system. Host trees and deciduous forest stands in the coniferous landscape are patchy, temporal and undergo changes in habitat quality during succession. LÄS MER
3. Forest-stream linkages : Experimental studies of foraging and growth of brown trout (Salmo trutta L)
Sammanfattning : Riparian vegetation along streams and rivers affects the aquatic community in numerous ways and often operates as a link for energy flux between forest and streams. The studies presented in this licentiate thesis focus on light and terrestrial invertebrates, two factors influenced by riparian zone structure, which potentially affect stream ecosystems and thus also brown trout (Salmo trutta). 4. Effects of temperature and terrestrial carbon on primary production in lake ecosystems
Sammanfattning : Climate warming is predicted to affect northern lake food webs in two ways: (1)directly via changes in water temperature and ice conditions, and (2) indirectlyvia changes in catchment characteristics and processes that influence input ofallochthonous coloured dissolved organic matter (cDOM) and nutrients. Input ofcDOM increases carbon dioxide (CO2) availability, causes brownification andreduced light conditions, and may increase nutrient availability especially forpelagic primary producers. LÄS MER
5. Modelling loading and growth of long bones Modelling loading and growth of long bones
Sammanfattning : The long bones grow by the process of endochondral ossification, which occurs at the growth plate. This process is regulated by biological factors and mechanical factors. The biological factors which contribute to endochondral ossification process are genes, hormones, nutrients etc. The mechanical factor is the load acting on the bone. LÄS MER
