11. Diversity of CD1d-restricted natural killer T cells
Sammanfattning : The present study deals with natural killer (NK) T cells restricted to the antigen presenting molecule CD1d. NKT cells have been suggested to play a role in many diverse immunological situations such as clearance of different pathogens, protection against certain tumors, regulation of autoimmune reactions and as a link between innate and adaptive immune responses. 12. Evaluation of fucosylated receptors for Cholera toxin in the human small intestine
Sammanfattning : Cholera toxin (CT) produced by Vibrio cholerae is the causative agent for the diarrheal disease cholera. Cholera is yearly afflicting millions and is estimated to kill over 100 000 people every year. In this thesis I aimed to better understand the role of noncanonical CT receptors, e.g. LÄS MER
13. Biochemical studies of carbohydrate blood group antigens - Carbohydrate phenotype in relation to cellular glycosyltranferases
Sammanfattning : The possibility to alter the cell surface carbohydrate expression by insertion or deletion of glycosyltransferase genes is a powerful technique to study the biological function of selected carbohydrate antigens. However, shifting the equilibrium between competing glycosyltransferases might lead to unexpected phenotypic effects, such as accumulation of other carbohydrate antigens and exposure of antigen structures that normally are cryptic or present in minute amounts on the cell surface. 14. Potent inhibitors of uropathogenic E. coli papG adhesins; Synthesis, conformational studies and biological evaluation of galabiose derivatives and synthesis of glycosphingolipid analogues
Sammanfattning : The importance of carbohydrates in biological systems has become evident during the last fifty years. It is well known that pathogenic bacteria and viruses attach to glycoconjugates present at mammalian cell surfaces, and that this attachment is a prerequisite for the later stages of infection. 15. Processing and presentation of exogenous antigen by dendritic cells
Sammanfattning : Dendritic cells (DC) play a key role in the immune system. In this thesis, we have investigated and characterized pathways for the processing and presentation of exogenous OVA on MHC-I ("cross-presentation") and how these were influenced by the purine nucleoside Adenosine (Ado), an immune regulator that accumulates to high concentrations at sites of inflammation and tumor growth.
