1. Making Doable Problems within Controversial Science : U.S. and Swedish Scientists’ Experience of Gene Transfer Research
Sammanfattning : This thesis explores how scientists within the controversial scientific field of gene transfer make their research doable. Based on in-depth interviews with gene transfer scientists and key individuals from different regulatory agencies and advisory boards in Sweden and the U.S.A. LÄS MER
2. The quest for new improved adenovirus gene therapy vectors against glioma tumours
Sammanfattning : Gene therapy has received much attention the last decade as a method to correct a number of disorders arising from a defective gene. Gene therapy can be defined as the introduction of a functional genetic element into a cell for a therapeutic purpose. LÄS MER
3. Chosen Children? : An empirical study and a philosophical analysis of moral aspects of pre-implantation genetic diagnosis and germ-line gene therapy
Sammanfattning : With pre-implantation genetic diagnosis (PGD), genetic testing and selective transfer of embryos is possible. In the future, germ-line gene therapy (GLGT) applied to embryos before implantation, in order to introduce missing genes or replace mutant ones, may be possible. LÄS MER
4. Specific genetic modifications in the CNS - Cell specific expression and gene specific regulation
Sammanfattning : Gene therapy is a promising therapeutic tool for many diseases of the CNS. Lentiviral vectors are particularly attractive since this vector type can transduce both dividing and non-dividing cells, have a relatively large cloning capacity, can sustain long-term transgene expression and have low immunogenicity. 5. Use of neural progenitor cell lines and astrocytes for transplantation and gene transfer to the CNS
Sammanfattning : Intracerebral neuronal transplantation have been shown to ameliorate symptoms of brain dysfunction in both animals models and Parkinson's disease, although problems still remain. The newly introduced technique of ex vivo gene transfer could serve as an alternative approach, possible avoiding some of the draw-backs of the embryonal tissue used in neuronal grafting. LÄS MER
