  1. 16. From Betterment to Bt maize : agricultural development and the introduction of genetically modified maize to South African smallholders

    Författare :Klara Fischer; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; []
    Nyckelord :LANTBRUKSVETENSKAPER; AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES; SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; LANTBRUKSVETENSKAPER; AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES;

    Sammanfattning : Agriculture has received renewed attention in poverty reduction efforts in Africa in recent years, and there are hopes that GM crops could have an important role in helping increase smallholder yields and reduce poverty. Drawing on critical discourse analysis (CDA) and livelihoods perspectives, this thesis examines the ideas governing the Massive Food Production Programme (MFPP), an agricultural development programme aiming to reduce poverty by raising agricultural production in Eastern Cape Province, South Africa, and its local effects when implemented in smallholder communities. 2. 17. Hydrophobic Interactions in Bioseparation - Applications of Modified Green Fluorescent Protein

    Författare :Kristian Becker; Tillämpad biokemi; []
    Nyckelord :Hydrophobic interaction chromatography; capillary electrochromatography; E. coli; isolation tags; haemoglobin; green fluorescent protein; retention prediction; genetic engineering; accessible surface area;

    Sammanfattning : This thesis describes interactions that are salt-promoted and mainly based on the hydrophobicity of proteins. A series of variants of the green fluorescent protein (GFP) was first constructed by site-directed mutagenesis. Several tags with various properties were then genetically fused to the N-terminus of GFP. LÄS MER

  3. 18. Environmental effects on pollen performance:potential consequences on gene flow

    Författare :Margaret Mollel; Biologiska institutionen; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Plant ecology; siring ability; risk assessment; pollen germination; pollen tube growth rate; Nicotiana alata; morphological markers; Cucumis sativus; Genetically modified crops hybridisation; Växtekologi;

    Sammanfattning : This thesis illustrates the effects of environmental factors on pollen performance and its importance on gene flow. Pollen competitive ability between the wild and cultivated species of four genera belonging to Cucurbitaceae family was compared to evaluate the evolutionary potential for selection on pollen tube growth rate. 4. 19. Interactions between neuronal nicotinic acetylcholine receptors, N-methyl-aspartate receptors and beta-amyloid in the brain of genetically modified mice : implications for Alheimer's disease

    Författare :Christina Unger; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :Abeta; Alzheimer s disease; APP; nAChR; NMDA receptors; synaptophysin; transgenic mice; treatment;

    Sammanfattning : The amyloid hypothesis is one of the leading theories in the search for the cause of Alzheimer's disease (AD) and is based on the theory that hyperproduction and accumulation of amyloid betapeptide (Abeta) in the brain triggers the disruption of neuronal and synaptic function, thereby ultimately leading to neurodegeneration and dementia. Some of the crucial questions are if Abeta has a neuronal function in the brain and how it interacts with the neurotransmitter system in AD. LÄS MER

  5. 20. Growth of genetically improved stands of Norway spruce, Scots pine and loblolly pine

    Författare :Samuel Egbäck; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; []
    Nyckelord :LANTBRUKSVETENSKAPER; AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES;

    Sammanfattning : Genetically improved material of Norway spruce (Picea abies (L.) Karst.), Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) and loblolly pine (Pinus taeda L. LÄS MER
