1. Genetic Determinants of Dyslipidemia
Sammanfattning : Dyslipidemia is a chronic deviation from normal blood lipid levels that can lead to atherosclerosis and other cardiovascular diseases; dyslipidemia and its sequelae are caused by the complex interplay of genetic and environmental factors. Although circulating concentrations of total cholesterol (TC), triglycerides (TG), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) have a strong genetic underpinning, not much is known about the genetic factors that affect long-term deteriorations in lipid concentrations. 2. Genetic epidemiology of prostate cancer
Sammanfattning : Prostate cancer is a major health burden throughout the world, yet the etiology of prostate cancer is poorly understood. Evidence has accumulated supporting the existence of a hereditary form of this disease. LÄS MER
3. Molecular Epidemiology of Cardiovascular Disease
Sammanfattning : Cardiovascular disease is a major cause of morbidity and mortality, with increasing prevalence worldwide.Identification of risk markers may enable improved prevention by targeting high-risk individuals, earlier disease diagnosis and treatment, as well as stratification of disease subtypes with different treatment options, thereby minimizing side effects while increasing success rates. 4. Genetic genealogy and epidemiology of Francisella
Sammanfattning : This thesis is about analyzing genetic differences among isolates of Francisella tularensis – the tularemia-causing bacterium. To elucidate how these bacterial isolates are related, and their geographical and genetic origins, I have developed typing assays for Francisella and used them to study the epidemiology of tularemia. 5. INDIVIDUAL GENETIC RESEARCH RESULTS : Uncertainties, Conceptions, and Preferences
Sammanfattning : This thesis contributes to the ethical discussion on how to handle incidental findings in biomedical research using sequencing technologies from a theoretical and an empirical perspective. Study I and II are theoretical studies that used conceptual analysis. LÄS MER
