21. Allosteric modulation of pentameric ligand-gated ion channels by general anesthetics
Sammanfattning : Pentameric ligand-gated ion channels (pLGICs) are key components of fast synaptic transmission and are targets of neuroactive drugs such as benzodiazepines, alcohol and muscle relaxants. Although early theories of general anesthesia suggested non-specific lipid interaction as the mechanism of anesthetic action, it has now become evident that they too bind to pLGICs. LÄS MER
22. A novel drug and device in anesthesia : with focus on breathing and upper airway physiology
Sammanfattning : Anesthesia-related airway complications are associated with hypoxia due to inability to secure or maintain the airway with subsequent insufficient ventilation and gas exchange. This thesis has explored the impact on airway integrity and respiratory regulation of two anesthetic compounds frequently used for sedation and a novel principle for oxygenation in patients at risk of hypoxia, in order to further improve patient safety during sedation and induction of anesthesia. 23. The effects of posture, airway pressure and anesthesia on regulation of the regional ventilation and perfusion distribution in healthy humans
Sammanfattning : Gas exchange has been observed to vary with posture in adult respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) patients. In this thesis, the effect of posture on theregional distribution of ventilation (V) and perfusion (Q) in the lungs under normal breathing with and without continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) and during general anesthesia with mechanical ventilation was studied. 24. Nicotinic transmission and drugs in anesthesia : neuromuscular blocking agents and propofol : consequences for carotid body function
Sammanfattning : The carotid body is the global oxygen sensor of the human body. Acute hypoxia elicits instant hyperventilation mediated from the carotid body type 1 cells, where nicotinic transmission is a key component in oxygen sensing and signalling. LÄS MER
25. Specialized pediatric healthcare with limited resources: Surgery, anesthesia and oncology for children in low- and middle-income countries
Sammanfattning : Aim: This thesis serves two purposes. First, it informs specialists in global public health to consider a broader spectrum of pediatric disease. Second, it informs specialists in pediatric hospital care of how the feasibility of their clinical practice depends on a functioning health care system. LÄS MER
