3. An emotional landscape of devotion : Religious experience in Reformation-period Sweden
Sammanfattning : This thesis explores how the Reformation in Sweden was experienced by 16th century people through an examination of emotional practices. It argues that religious texts such as prayer books, sermon collections and instruction manuals were formative for the religious setting of the 16th century and that the use of these texts would therefore involve emotional practices for the 16thcentury Christian, thus creating an emotional experience of the Reformation for the Christian who used these texts. Sammanfattning : How did the Swedish towns compare to the surrounding world during the late Middle Ages concerning town organization and political culture? Previous research has claimed a strong German influence on the Swedish town life, but in this dissertation the Europeanization is being put forward as the explanatory factor for the extensive international similarities that can be identified during the Middle Ages. 5. Total St Gall : Medieval Monastery as a Disciplinary Institution
Sammanfattning : How much was a medieval monastery reminiscent of a modern prison? Or insane asylum? And if it was in the least - what can such a metaphor tell us about power relations structuring the life of medieval monks?The purpose of this compilation thesis (sammanläggningsavhandling) is to render explicit and analyze relations of power and modes of control comprising the social tissue of early medieval Benedictine monasteries. By bringing up the examples of tenth- and eleventh-century monasteries of St Gall, Fulda, and Bury St Edmunds, this thesis seeks to understand what power was in medieval monasteries, how and between whom it was exercised, what and how it affected in terms of collective and individual identity.
