11. Cryptogenic Polyneuropathy : Clinical, Environmental, And Genetic Studies
Sammanfattning : Objectives: The purpose of this medical thesis was to describe the clinical and neurophysiological features and to evaluate the health related quality of life (HR-QoL) in patients with cryptogenic polyneuropathy. We also wanted to investigate different occupational, and leisure time exposures as determinants for cryptogenic polyneuropathy, and to analyze whether polymorphisms for the null alleles of Glutathione S-Transferase Mu-1 (GSTM1), and Theta-1 (GSTT1), and a low activity genetic variation of epoxide hydrolase (EPHX) affect the risk of developing polyneuropathy. 12. Mifepristone for preoperative treatment of uterine leiomyoma
Sammanfattning : AIM: To explore the clinical impact and its molecular regulation on uterine leiomyomas in preoperative treatment with mifepristone, a progesterone receptor modulator (PRM). BACKGROUND: Uterine leiomyomas are highly prevalent in fertile women, increasing with age up to 35-50 % in a population approaching the age of 50. LÄS MER
13. Genetic predisposition and risk factors for neurodegenerative diseases with special emphasis on Parkinson's disease and solvent-induced chronic toxic encephalopathy
Sammanfattning : The inter-individual variability in biotransformation, may lead to differences in activation and detoxification of both endogenous and exogenous compounds. Polymorphism studies in such genes were applied for Parkinson's disease (PD) and Chronic toxic encephalopathy (CTE), two diseases influenced by both genetic and enviromnental factors. LÄS MER
14. Diet, lifestyle, antioxidants, and biomarkers of cancer risk - an epidemiological report from the Malmö Diet and Cancer cohort
Sammanfattning : This thesis examines associations between a number of epidemiological or biological markers of cancer risk and oxidative stress, in order to achieve a better understanding of how diet, lifestyle, and genetic factors contribute to the occurrence of oxidative stress. Data from the Malmö Diet and Cancer (MDC) cohort was used. LÄS MER
15. Multiple Functions of Glutathione Transferases : A Study on Enzymatic Function, Regulatory Role and Distribution in Mouse and Man
Sammanfattning : To cope with various endogenous toxin and xenobiotics nature has equipped the organisms with a proper protection system. Glutathione transferases (GSTs) are important components of the cellular defense against oxidative stress. These proteins appear to be suited for different tasks. LÄS MER
