1. The Milky Way as seen through Neutron-Capture Elements
Sammanfattning : Through stars, the formation and evolution of the Galaxy goes hand-in-hand with the cosmic origin of the elements. As stars form, they carry chemical fingerprints of their birthclouds, providing us with chemical timestamps of the Galaxy. The detailed history of the Galactic disk and bulge is still to be untagled. 2. Galactic Structure Revealed by Space Astrometry
Sammanfattning : This work demonstrates how the structure of our Galaxy, the Milky Way, can be unveiled with the use of space astrometry. It consists of two parts, of which the first is a brief introduction to the fields of Galactic structure, covering the Galaxy's stellar constituents, how the Galaxy was formed and how it has evolved over time, both chemically and kinematically. 3. A Photometric Study of the Galactic Disks based on Strömgren Photometry
Sammanfattning : One of the key questions in todays galaxy research is the formation and evolution of disk galaxies such as the Milky Way. Using observations in the intermediate band Stromgren uvby filter system we have investigated how both density and metallicity varies within the Galactic disks in order to learn more about the Galaxy and its past. 4. Dark Matter in the Solar System, Galaxy, and Beyond
Sammanfattning : There is evidence that dark matter constitutes a majority of the Universe's matter content. Yet, we are ignorant about its nature. Understanding dark matter requires new physics, possibly in the form of a new species of fundamental particles. LÄS MER
5. Active Galactic Nuclei in galaxy surveys : Empirical paths to the fiery hearts of cosmic beasts
Sammanfattning : Some galaxies emit excessive amounts of light from their centers, caused by accretion of gas onto super-massive black holes (SMBH). These galactic cores are often referred to as Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) and they come in many different forms, distinguishable by their emission properties. LÄS MER
