11. Exercise-induced muscle soreness : a qualitative and quantitative study of human muscle morphology and function
Sammanfattning : Exercise-induced muscle soreness is characterized by stiffness, tenderness and pain during active movements and weakness of the affected musculature the days after unusually or particularly heavy work. The most pronounced subjective symptoms do not arise immediately but rather between a couple of hours to some days after the exercise (a delayed-onset of muscle soreness), the intensity of pain is greatest about 48 hours after the work. 12. Cross transfer effects after unilateral muscle overuse : an experimental animal study about alterations in the morphology and the tachykinin system of muscles
Sammanfattning : Unilateral exercise can produce certain contralateral strength effects. Deleterious events can be cross-transferred as well, as illustrated by a strict symmetry in some chronic inflammatory diseases. LÄS MER
13. Myocardial Perfusion and Function: Comparative assessment by ECG, SPECT and MRI
Sammanfattning : Evaluation of myocardial perfusion and function is important in management of patients with suspected or known coronary artery disease. This thesis focuses on the use of common diagnostic methods, myocardial perfusion single-photon emission computed tomography (MPS) and electrocardiography (ECG), to enhance and validate the diagnostic information. 14. Inflammatory mechanisms in bacterial infections: focus on mast cells and mastitis
Sammanfattning : Inflammation is an unspecific response of the immune system to pathogens, for example, invasion by bacteria. This thesis focuses on two aspects of inflammation in the context of bacterial infections: (1) mast cells and (2) mastitis. LÄS MER
15. Structural and functional studies of enzymes in nucleotide metabolism : a detailed investigation of two enzymes and interaction profiling of FDA-approved nucleoside analog drugs with 23 enzymes
Sammanfattning : Enzymes in nucleotide metabolism serve as the producers of the building blocks for DNA and RNA. From a medical perspective, nucleotide metabolism, and in particular salvage pathway enzymes, have attracted special interest, as nucleoside prodrugs given in the treatment of cancer and HIV are converted into their active metabolite forms by these enzymes.
