1. Volatile metabolites from microorganisms in indoor environments : sampling, analysis and identification
Sammanfattning : Microorganisms are able to produce a wide variety of volatile organic compounds. This thesis deals with sampling, analysis and identification of such compounds, produced by microorganisms commonly found in buildings. LÄS MER
2. Structure and biosynthesis of fungal secondary metabolites : studies of the root rot pathogen Heterobasidion annosum s.l. and the biocontrol fungus Phlebiopsis gigantea
Sammanfattning : The root rot pathogen Heterobasidion annosum s.l., i.e. LÄS MER
3. On the investigation of chemical parameters reflecting microbial activity linked to nutrient availability in forest soil
Sammanfattning : As agrarian society developed, the most fertile soils able to sustain the nutritional requirements needed for high crop yield were assigned to farming, while the more penurious soils were left to uphold the forest ecosystems. Some temperate forests are developed on acidic soils considered to be nutrient poor, as much of the inorganic nutrients are entrapped in poorly weatherable soil minerals and not easily accessed by plant roots. 4. Improving the biocatalyst. Engineering of fungal oxidoreductases and thin-film electrodes for improvement of membraneless biofuel cells and carbohydrate biosensors
Sammanfattning : This thesis presents investigations for the improvement of electrical contact and catalytical properties of two fungal redox enzymes, cellobiose dehydrogenase (CDH) and pyranose dehydrogenase (PDH), with electrodes and the use of the prepared electrodes as carbohydrate biosensors and in enzymatic biofuel cells. The performance of enzyme modified electrodes can be improved in two ways, by modifying the bioelement or by modifying the electrode. LÄS MER
5. Analysis of Secondary Metabolites from Aspergillus fumigatus and Penicillium nalgiovense : Antimicrobial Compounds from Filamentous Fungi Isolated from Extreme Environments
Sammanfattning : This thesis describes the cultivation and extraction of filamentous fungi isolated from extreme environments in the search for new antibiotic compounds. Filamentous fungi are a rich source of medicines including antibiotics, and it is believed that many currently unknown fungal species and bioactive fungal metabolites remain to be discovered. LÄS MER
