11. Genetic and Genomic Studies in Chicken : Assigning Function to Vertebrate Genes
Sammanfattning : A major challenge in the post-genomic era is to understand how genome sequence variants (genotype) give rise to the enormous diversity observed in terms of morphology, physiology and behavior (phenotype) among living organisms. Domestic animals—with their tremendous phenotypic variation—are excellent model organisms for determining the relationships between genotype and phenotype. LÄS MER
12. Light Protection in Plants: Characterisation of Violaxanthin de-epoxidase
Sammanfattning : Plants and algae need light to drive the photosynthetic machinery. An excess of light will, however, result in damage to the photosynthetic machinery and to the rest of the organism. The surplus of energy, when exposed to light stress is converted into less harmful heat energy through a process called non-photochemical quenching. LÄS MER
13. Sharp Bounds for Calderón-Zygmund Operators in a Vector-Valued Setting
Sammanfattning : In this thesis we extend several classical results about Calderón-Zygmund operators to spaces of vector-valued functions. We first obtain bounds for the norm of dyadic Haar shift operators using a Bellman function technique, and then apply the representation theorem to obtain corresponding results for general Calderón-Zygmund operators. 14. Role of arginase in vascular function
Sammanfattning : Background: Nitric oxide (NO) is central for the integrity of the cardiovascular system, the maintenance of endothelial function and the protection against ischaemic heart disease. The enzyme arginase is up-regulated during ischaemia-reperfusion and by hypoxia in cell culture and animal models which might be of pathophysiological relevance since it competes with NO synthase for their common substrate arginine. 15. Biochemical Studies on a Plant Epoxide Hydrolase : Discovery of a Proton Entry and Exit Pathway and the Use of In vitro Evolution to Shift Enantioselectivity
Sammanfattning : The work leading to this thesis has provided additional information and novel knowledge concerning structure-function relationship in the potato epoxide hydrolase. Epoxide hydrolases are enzymes catalyzing the hydrolysis of epoxides to yield the corresponding vicinal diols. LÄS MER
