11. Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs in Cyclooxygenases 1 and 2 : Binding modes and mechanisms from computational methods and free energy calculations
Sammanfattning : Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are one of the most commonly used classes of drugs. They target the cyclooxygenases (COX) 1 and 2 to reduce the physiological responses of pain, fever, and inflammation. Due to their role in inducing angiogenesis, COX proteins have also been identified as targets in cancer therapies. LÄS MER
12. Efficiency Enhancement Techniques for Free-Electron Lasers
Sammanfattning : The central question addressed in this thesis is how to make the free-electron laser (FEL) more efficient. In recent years, coherent diffraction imaging provides an important motivation for efficiency enhancement. This is because a more efficient FEL process enables converting a larger fraction of the electron beam's power into optical power. LÄS MER
13. Modeling of a Free Piston Energy Converter
Sammanfattning : ABSTRACTThe Free Piston Energy Converter (FPEC) is a new type of automotive prime mover, offering high efficiency in conjunction with low emissions. The FPEC essentially consists of two opposing cylinders with a linear alternator incorporated in-between that produces electric power directly. LÄS MER
14. Life Cycle Costing in Road Planning and Management : A Case Study on Collision-free Roads
Sammanfattning : Construction of infrastructure does not only mean large capital investments but also future costs to operate and maintain these assets. Decision making in planning and design of roads will impact the need of future operation and maintenance activities. LÄS MER
15. Responsibility and Ambivalence
Sammanfattning : I use the concept of ambivalence—the state of being faced with a choice that cannot be resolved without sacrificing something of value—to approach five contemporary debates in the philosophy of moral responsibility: (1) psychopathy, (2) free will, (3) the emotion of guilt, (4) regret and indirect moral luck, and (5) moral demandingness. Rather than arguing for one theory or another, acknowledging ambivalence paves the way for resolving these debates by reconciling the opposing sides. LÄS MER
