16. Shape Based Recognition – Cognitive Vision Systems in Traffic Safety Applications
Sammanfattning : Traffic accidents are globally the number one cause of death for people 15-29 years old and is among the top three causes for all age groups 5-44 years. Much of the work within this thesis has been carried out in projects aiming for (cognitive) driver assistance systems and hopefully represents a step towards improving traffic safety. LÄS MER
17. The Governmentality of Meta-governance : Identifying Theoretical and Empirical Challenges of Network Governance in the Political Field of Security and Beyond
Sammanfattning : Meta-governance recently emerged in the field of governance as a new approach which claims that its use enables modern states to overcome problems associated with network governance. This thesis shares the view that networks are an important feature of contemporary politics which must be taken seriously, but it also maintains that networks pose substantial analytical and political challenges. 18. Breaking the Unbreakable : Exploiting Loopholes in Bell’s Theorem to Hack Quantum Cryptography
Sammanfattning : In this thesis we study device-independent quantum key distribution based on energy-time entanglement. This is a method for cryptography that promises not only perfect secrecy, but also to be a practical method for quantum key distribution thanks to the reduced complexity when compared to other quantum key distribution protocols. 19. Effects of retrieval and articulation on memory
Sammanfattning : Many would agree that learning occurs when new information is stored in memory. Therefore, most learning efforts typically focus on encoding processes, such as additional study or other forms of repetition. However, as I will outline in this thesis, there are other means by which to improve memory, such as retrieval practice in the form of tests. LÄS MER
20. Peak Shear Strength of Rock Joints – Towards a Methodology for Prediction Based on Field Data
Sammanfattning : The rock joint shear strength at field scale is an important design parameter and remains a challenge for rock mechanics engineers. In Sweden, there exist a large number of concrete dams that are founded on rock masses which in many cases contain sub-horizontal rock joints. LÄS MER
