1. Transcriptional regulation of thyroid development possible interplay of endoderm- and mesoderm-derived morphogenetic signals
Sammanfattning : Congenital hypothyroidism (CH) affects 1 in 3000 children and is the major cause of treatable mental retardation. Most cases are due to malformations of the gland, collectively named thyroid dysgenesis. The disease results from defective thyroid organogenesis during embryonic life. LÄS MER
2. Origin and development of thyroid progenitor cells: experimental studies on endoderm, Foxa2 and EphA4

3. Embryonic Stem Cells: Differentiation into Insulin Producing Cells and Elimination of Damaged Proteins
Sammanfattning : This thesis includes two different parts: One focusing on how to induce human embryonic stem cells (hESCs) to differentiate into insulin producing cells by following the normal pancreatic development pathway. These cells have then the potential to be an unlimited source for diabetes regenerative medicine. LÄS MER
4. Exploration of large molecular datasets using global gene networks : computational methods and tools
Sammanfattning : Defining gene expression profiles and mapping complex interactions between molecular regulators and proteins is a key for understanding biological processes and the functional properties of cells, which is therefore, the focus on numerous experimental studies. Small-scale biochemical analyses deliver high-quality data, but lack coverage, whereas high throughput sequencing reveals thousands of interactions which can be error-prone and require proper computational methods to discover true relations. 5. Genome-Wide Studies of Transcriptional Regulation in Mammalian Cells
Sammanfattning : The key to the complexity of higher organisms lies not in the number of protein coding genes they carry, but rather in the intrinsic complexity of the gene regulatory networks. The major effectors of transcriptional regulation are proteins called transcription factors, and in this thesis four papers describing genome-wide studies of seven such factors are presented, together with studies on components of the chromatin and transcriptome.
