  1. 1. Phylogeographic Structure and Genetic Variation in Formica Ants

    Författare :Anna Goropashnaya; Pekka Pamilo; David Bilton; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Genetics; Formica ants; phylogeography; phylogeny; Pleistocene refugia; population expansion; social organization; Genetik; Clinical genetics; Klinisk genetik;

    Sammanfattning : The aim of this thesis is to study phylogeny, species-wide phylogeography and genetic diversity in Formica ants across Eurasia in connection with the history of biotic responses to Quaternary environmental changes.The mitochondrial DNA phylogeny of Palaearctic Formica species supported the subgeneric grouping based on morphological similarity. 2. 2. Effects of Social Organisation on Spatial Genetic Structures in Formica Ants

    Författare :Niclas Gyllenstrand; Michael Bruford; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Biology; Formica ants; microsatellites; monogyny; mtDNA; polygyny; social insects; Biologi; Biology; Biologi; naturvårdsbiologi; Conservation Biology;

    Sammanfattning : The social organization of social insect colonies can be broadly defined as monogynous, single reproductive female or polygynous, several reproductive females. Monogynous organization is genetically simple while polygynous is more complex and the two social forms differ commonly in mating and dispersal behaviour as well as in colony foundation. LÄS MER

  3. 3. Adaptive significance of queen mating frequency in ants : In search of benefits of genetic variability

    Författare :Pia J. Gertsch; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Developmental biology; Utvecklingsbiologi; Developmental biology; Utvecklingsbiologi; Genetics; genetik;

    Sammanfattning : Fitness effects of polyandry, multiple mating by females, were studied on two ant speciesLasius niger and Formica truncorum. Particular emphasis was put on evaluating diploid male load, which happens when homozygosity in the sex determination locus leads to intendedfemales developing into sterile, diploid males. LÄS MER

  4. 4. Interactions between ants and pine weevils : effects on forest regeneration

    Författare :Vita Manak; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES;

    Sammanfattning : Ants interact with plants in various ways and ant presence on plants can decrease local abundance or activity of herbivores, which in turn increases plant fitness. Red wood ants (Formica rufa group) are common species in forests of northern Europe. LÄS MER
