1. Where have all the forests gone? Quantifying pantropical deforestation drivers
Sammanfattning : Deforestation across the tropics continues to be a major source of greenhouse gas emissions and the largest threat to biodiversity on land. With strengthened commitments to reduce deforestation from countries and companies alike, it is crucial that renewed investments for reducing deforestation be guided by a sound understanding of what drives deforestation. 2. Fire history and tree population dynamics in Białowieża Forest, Poland and Belarus
Sammanfattning : Fire history and fire regime parameters in relation to the long-term tree population dynamics were studied with dendroecological methods across coniferous habitats of Białowieża Forest (E Poland and W Belarus), a semi-natural European temperate woodland ecosystem. In four different studies various aspects of fire dynamics were explored by using nearly 1500 tree ring samples of Pinus sylvestris and Picea abies. LÄS MER
3. Old-Growth Forests in the High Coast Region in Sweden and Active Management in Forest Set-Asides
Sammanfattning : In today´s intensively managed landscape, very few forests with old-growth characteristics and little human impact exist. One of the rare exceptions is pine forests on rocky soils, a forest type which has probably escaped extensive human use because of its low productivity. LÄS MER
4. Modelling and Retrieval of Forest Parameters from Synthetic Aperture Radar Data
Sammanfattning : Currently, one of the most uncertain factors in the global carbon cycle models lies in the terrestrialcarbon stock, mainly forests. The available methods for global forest resource mapping provide onlyrough estimates of biomass, the most relevant practical quantity related to carbon stock. LÄS MER
5. Aspects of regeneration in tropical secondary forests of Northeast Borneo affected by selective logging, El Niño-induced drought and fire
Sammanfattning : A large proportion of the world´s tropical rainforests are today secondary forests, a term encompassing forests in various degrees of degeneration. For the main traits of old-growth forests´ structures, species composition and ecosystem functions to recover, regeneration of non-pioneer tree species is essential. LÄS MER
