1. Recovery from focal brain ischemia induced by extradural compression in diabetic and non-diabetic rats
Sammanfattning : Cerebrovascular disease and head trauma are among the leading causes of death and disability. In addition to severe motor disturbances, ischemia resulting from stroke or traumatic brain injury (TBI) can cause mild to severe cognitive deficits. LÄS MER
2. Ischemic brain damage following transient and moderate compression of sensorimotor cortex in Sprague-Dawley and diabetic Goto-Kakizaki rats
Sammanfattning : Several animal models have been developed to facilitate the investigation of biochemical, physiological, and neurological events after cerebral ischemia. In this study we present a new animal model which reliably describes morphological changes and neurological deficits produced by mild to moderate brain ischemia and which can be used to identify novel, potentially useful, neuroprotective agents. LÄS MER
3. Phospholipase A2 in nerve injury and axonal outgrowth
Sammanfattning : This thesis deals with processes coupled to injury in the peripheral nervous system (PNS), with a general aim to investigate the role of phospholipase A2 (PLA2) enzymes in axonal outgrowth. The axonal outgrowth of dorsal root ganglia (DRG) neurons in vitro was reduced by several different inhibitors of PLA2 activity and enhanced by an activator of this enzyme. LÄS MER
4. NMDA receptors in neurodegeneration : studies on NMDA receptor subunit expression preceding ischemia-induced delayed nerve cell death
Sammanfattning : NMDA receptors are glutamate-gated ion channels that are permeable to Ca2+. NMDA receptors are tetramers formed by a combination of subunits. In the present thesis, we describe the novel NR3B subunit that we cloned in mouse and human. NR3B was found to be expressed in the adult rat and human central nervous system (CNS). LÄS MER
5. Human neural stem cell transplantation in experimental brain trauma
Sammanfattning : Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is the leading cause of death and disability in young adults in the industrialized world. Human neural stem/progenitor cells (hNSCs) can be expanded in culture and have the ability to differentiate into the major cell types of the adult brain. LÄS MER
