1. The diagnostic potential of the He I D3 spectral line in the solar atmosphere
Sammanfattning : The research question of my PhD is in a way a simple one: what can observations of the He I D3 line teach us about the solar chromosphere? This optical spectral line at 5876 Å is generally formed in the upper chromosphere, and is sensitive to the local magnetic field. The He I D3 line is also indirectly sensitive to heating of the transition region and corona, since it is resulting from a transition that occurs between levels in the triplet system of neutral helium. 2. Flux emergence: flares and coronal mass ejections driven by dynamo action underneath the solar surface
Sammanfattning : Helically shaped magnetic field structuresknown as coronal mass ejections (CMEs) are closely related to so-called eruptive flares. On the one hand, these events are broadly believed to be due tothe buoyant rise of magnetic flux tubes from the bottom of the convection zone to the photosphere where they form structures such as sunspots. 3. Recognition molecules of the complement system: C1q and mannan-binding lectin in autoimmunity and immune defence
Sammanfattning : The C1 subcomponent C1q and the mannan-binding lectin (MBL) are recognition proteins of the complement system, and have similar structure. C1q binds to IgG and IgM and activates the classical pathway. MBL binds to carbohydrate structures and activates the lectin pathway. LÄS MER
4. Uncovering biomarkers and molecular heterogeneity of complex diseases : Utilizing the power of Data Science
Sammanfattning : Uncovering causal drivers of complex diseases is yet a difficult challenge. Unlike single-gene disorders complex diseases are heterogeneous and are caused by a combination of genetic, environmental, and lifestyle factors which complicates the identification of patient subgroups and the disease causal drivers. 5. C-reactive protein (CRP) and anti-CRP autoantibodies in systemic lupus erythematosus : a study on the occurrence and clinical implications of anti-CRP antibodies and CRP-mediated complement activation
Sammanfattning : Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is an autoimmune disease characterized by production of a wide range of autoantibodies, multiple organ involvement and by local formation or tissue deposition of immune complexes (ICs) in the inflamed organs. In contrast to most systemic inflammatory conditions, and despite raised levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines, SLE flares are rarely reflected by elevated C-reactive protein (CRP), an important acute-phase reactant in man with homologs in vertebrates and several invertebrates.
