Sammanfattning : This study illuminates Scandinavian literature’s engagement with the fin de siècle as a momentous temporal threshold, when the widespread feeling of being poised on the brink of a distinctly modern age while at the same time witnessing the demise of the old world produced excitement as well as anxiety, a sense of loss and nostalgia. The dissertation explores how three male authors of the Scandinavian canon – Ola Hansson, August Strindberg and Knut Hamsun – depict the ambivalent experience of being torn between nostalgia and a heady sense of departure. 2. Losing the plot : architecture and narrativity in fin-de siècle media cultures
Sammanfattning : This thesis investigates the role of the term plot in mediating relations between architecture and narrativity. Examining organisational strategies in the creation of real and virtual spaces, it identifies literary works by novelists who have resisted, or subverted, plot conventions in fiction (Joris-Karl Huysmans, Edmond de Goncourt, Xavier de Maistre and Neal Stephenson), and introduces architectural spaces such as Thomas Edison’s film-studio Black Maria, and the plotless productions of early cinematography, to juxtapose concepts of plot and spatiality in a study of the production and consumption of pre-digital virtual spaces. 3. Les Figures féminines de la Décadence et leurs implications esthétiques dans quelques romans français et suédois
Sammanfattning : “The female figures of the Decadence and their aesthetic significance in some French and Swedish novels” This thesis compares Swedish and French literary prose fiction written between 1884 and1892 and its approach to Decadent themes, with focus on the female portraits and their aesthetic impact. Eight texts are analyzed in order to explore how the Swedish fin de siècle literature – partly interpreted as belonging to the political literary program of the ”Modern Breakthrough” – relates to the French literature and the Decadence.
