1. Development of methods for determining aflatoxins in biological material
Sammanfattning : In this thesis, it is shown how aflatoxins can be determined in biological material. The thesis is a summary of five papers.Aflatoxins are carcinogenic mycotoxins produced by Aspergillus moulds. Methods were developed for the determination of aflatoxins in samples of airborne dust and human urine collected at feed factories. LÄS MER
2. Towards a Better Understanding and Control of Factors Affecting the Physical Quality of Fish Feed
Sammanfattning : As aquaculture expands, the volume of fish feed produced and transported must also increase. Therefore a better understanding and increased control of the factors that influence the physical quality of feed pellets is required. To achieve this goal, reliable methods measuring the physical quality of feed are needed. LÄS MER
3. Insights into genomics and gene expression of oleaginous yeasts of the genus Rhodoturula
Sammanfattning : The Rhodotorula glutinis cluster includes oleaginous yeast species with high biotechnological potential as cell factories for lipid, carotenoid, and oleochemical production. They can grow on various low-cost residues, such as lignocellulose and crude glycerol. LÄS MER
4. Microbial Production of Bio-Based Chemicals: A Biorefinery Perspective
Sammanfattning : A shift from fossil- to renewable biomass feedstock for the emerging bio-based economy requires the development and adoption of new sustainable technologies that are more suited for transformation of biomass components to chemicals, materials and energy. This thesis presents investigations on the development of processes based on industrial biotechnology as a key element for the production of chemicals from agro-/industrial by-products. LÄS MER
5. Innovative processing of brown seaweed for value-added products
Sammanfattning : The increasing depletion of fossil fuels, rising greenhouse gas emissions, and a growing global population have increased the need for sustainable food and energy sources. Traditional industrial biotechnology, which relies on plant-based feedstocks, competes with food production for arable land. LÄS MER
