1. Regulation of T-cell proliferation and B-CLL apoptosis by CD6 and FAS/FASL
Sammanfattning : T-cell activation involves the interaction between the T-cell receptor (TCR) and the peptide/MHC complex presented on an antigen-presenting cell. However, this is not sufficient for the full development of T cell responses and co-stimulatory signals from accessory molecules are required. LÄS MER
2. Ultraviolet radiation and cornea
Sammanfattning : Background: Acute exposure of the mammalian eye to UVR results in development of photokeratitis after a period of a few hours. Chronic exposure to UVR is associated with an increased risk of several corneal disorders, including pterygium, climatic droplet keratopathy, and climatic proteoglycan stromal keratopathy. LÄS MER
3. Modulation of tumor sensitivity to effector mechanisms of cytotoxic lymphocytes
Sammanfattning : Today, ample evidence demonstrates a clear role for the immune system in the battle against cancer. However, the relatively high rate of mutation and proliferation of tumor cells, in combination with the selective pressure exerted by the immune system, can potentially lead to the generation of genetically altered tumor cells, which are able to evade recognition by the immune system and continue to grow and form tumors. 4. Dysregulation of receptor induced apoptosis during human leishmaniasis : a possible mechanism of skin ulceration
Sammanfattning : Leishmaniasis is endemic in 88 countries and 12 million people per year have been estimated to be at risk of infection. The causative agent, the protozoan Leishmania, is spread by sand-flies and infects macrophages in the mammalian host. Leishmaniasis in humans form a spectrum of clinical presentations. In cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) caused by L. LÄS MER
5. Immune activation during HIV-1 infection : implication for B cell dysfunctions and therapy monitoring
Sammanfattning : Aberrant activation of cells of the immune system plays a major role in the pathogenesis of HIV infection. The major aims of the thesis were: (a) to measure the effects of current antiretroviral therapy on immune activation through the analysis of soluble activation markers; (b) to evaluate the extent of T and B cell immune activation in relation to immunological and virological parameters; (c) to analyse the T-B cell molecular pathway leading to hyperactivation of B cells and loss of B cell function.
