11. The Ins and Outs of Membrane Proteins : Topology Studies of Bacterial Membrane Proteins
Sammanfattning : α-helical membrane proteins comprise about a quarter of all proteins in a cell and carry out a wide variety of essential cellular functions. This thesis is focused on topology analyses of bacterial membrane proteins. The topology describes the two-dimensional structural arrangement of a protein relative to the membrane. LÄS MER
12. Small non-coding RNA in early fly development : plasticity, interactions and improved bioinformatic tools
Sammanfattning : At fertilization, the male and female pronuclei undergo a transformation from germline to pluripotency as they fuse, marking the beginning of Drosophila embryogenesis. As the parental contributions decrease, the zygote takes control of its genome in a process called the maternal-to-zygotic transition (MZT). LÄS MER
13. Dynamics of excited electronic states in functional materials
Sammanfattning : Non-equilibrium processes involving excited electron states are very common in nature. This work summarizes some of the theoretical developments available to study them in finite and ex-tended systems. LÄS MER
14. Synaptic vesicle endocytosis studied in a living synapse
Sammanfattning : Neurons in the central nervous system communicate by transmitting electrical signals at special sites of contact called synapses. Synapses contain neurotransmitter-filled synaptic vesicles, which fuse with the presynaptic plasma membrane. The neurotransmitter diffuses to the neighboring neuron and triggers a new electrical signal. LÄS MER
15. Mechanical properties and microstructure of laser sintered and starch consolidated iron-based powders
Sammanfattning : In powder metallurgy research field, Direct Metal Laser Sintering (DMLS) and Metal Powder Starch Consolidation (MPSC) are relatively new rapid forming techniques to fabricate complex and near net-shaped components. The working principles of DMLS are to melt and fuse metal powder layer by layer in computer controlled systems to pile up components like three dimensional printing. LÄS MER
