1. Transmission Electron Microscopy for Characterization of Structures, Interfaces and Magnetic Moments in Magnetic Thin Films and Multilayers
Sammanfattning : Structural characterization is essential for the understanding of the magnetic properties of thin films and multilayers. In this thesis, both crystalline and amorphous thin films and multilayers were analyzed utilizing transmission electron microscopy (TEM). LÄS MER
2. Topological excitations in field theory models of superconductivity and magnetism
Sammanfattning : Topological excitations are subjects of intensive studies in physics and mathematics. In solid-state and soft matter physics, topological excitations can largely determine the thermodynamic and electromagnetic properties of materials, while in high energy physics they were theorized as particles. 3. Light for a brighter morrow : paving the way for sustainable light-emitting devices
Sammanfattning : We live in an artificially lit world, where light enhances our productivity and improves our quality of life. Today our appetite for light is stronger than ever, and emerging light-emitting technologies do not just replace the classical incandescent light bulb, they also open up for a new world of applications. 4. Experimental Studies of Neutron Deficient Nuclei in the A ≈ 110 and A ≈ 170 Mass Regions
Sammanfattning : This doctoral thesis describes several experimental studies on the structures of neutron-deficient nuclei with mass numbers A≈110 and A≈170. The experiments were carried out at the Accelerator Laboratory of the University of Jyväskylä, Finland, using heavy-ion fusion-evaporation reactions induced by beams of energies around 5 megaelectronvolts/nucleon. 5. Temporal Modulation in Fluorescence Spectroscopy and Imaging for Biological Applications
Sammanfattning : This thesis explores the benefits of intensity modulation for the purpose of extending the range of applications of fluorescence spectroscopy and imaging in cellular and molecular biology and medicine. Long-lived transient states of fluorescent molecules can, because of their long lifetimes, be used to detect subtle changes in the microenvironment of the molecule. LÄS MER
