1. Agency and Artefacts : A cognitive semiotic exploration of design
Sammanfattning : This thesis investigates the role of artefacts in relation to human agency and design within a cognitive semiotics framework. It deals with questions such as What is agency? What are artefacts and how does agency relate to them? What kind of intentions are involved in the activity of designing? What is human-specific with respect to agency and design? How can the origins and evolution of design be explained? Addressing these questions, the thesis proposes a layered model of agency for explaining the relations between different grades of agentive complexity. LÄS MER
2. Exploration and Optimization of Building Design Solutions using Computational Design
Sammanfattning : The focus of building design is increasingly moving towards considering performance as a driver, which can especially be seen in the realm of sustainable or green building design due to the advent of ambitious goals regarding energy consumption and emissions. Accounting for these concerns is an important target of the building design process, where there is a potential to make valuable contributions. LÄS MER
3. Template-Based Design Analysis : An Alternative Approach for the Engineering Designer to Perform Computer-Based Design Analysis
Sammanfattning : The current trend in industry to encourage engineering designers to take an active part in the analysis of their own design solutions is apparent in many companies today, domestically as well as abroad. From a research project with the objective to develop a computer-based design system for the design of lightweight grippers, one of the major difficulties was to overcome the system users’ lack of knowledge and experience in the design of lightweight structures and Computer-Based Design Analysis (CBDA). 4. Evolutionary and Pharmacological Studies of NPY and QRFP Receptors
Sammanfattning : The neuropeptide Y (NPY) system consists of 3-4 peptides and 4-7 receptors in vertebrates. It has powerful effects on appetite regulation and is involved in many other biological processes including blood pressure regulation, bone formation and anxiety. LÄS MER
5. Evolving intelligence : Overcoming challenges for Evolutionary Deep Learning
Sammanfattning : Deep Learning (DL) has achieved remarkable results in both academic and industrial fields over the last few years. However, DL models are often hard to design and require proper selection of features and tuning of hyper-parameters to achieve high performance. These selections are tedious for human experts and require substantial time and resources. LÄS MER
