  1. 11. Endocrine modulators and sexual differentiation in Japanese quail : With emphasis on the neuroendocrine system

    Författare :Krister Halldin; Ted Ebendal; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Biology; Japanese quail; sexual behavior; endocrine disruption; sexual differentiation; estrogen; estrogen receptors; avian; Biologi; Biology; Biologi; Ecotoxicology; ekotoxikologi;

    Sammanfattning : Chemical disruption of the endocrine system in various animal species is currently attracting considerable interest, but avian models are not yet widely used in studying endocrine disturbances. This thesis shows the occurrence of alterations in sexual behavior and reproductive organs in adult Japanese quail (Coturnix japonica) following embryonic exposure to estrogen-like chemicals. 2. 12. Arthritis and immune-mediated bone loss - role of estrogen signalling pathways

    Författare :Cecilia Engdahl; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Arthritis; Bone; Estrogen;

    Sammanfattning : Objective: Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is associated with immune-mediated bone loss and thereby increased risk for fractures. Estrogen and selective estrogen receptor modulators (SERMs) ameliorate not only the incidence and progression of experimental RA but also the immune-mediated bone loss. LÄS MER

  3. 13. Estrogen-inducible neuropeptides in the rat brain: role in focal ischemic lesions

    Författare :Annette Theodorsson; Elvar Theodorsson; A: Langmoen; Linköpings universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Estrogen; neuropeptides; galanin; cerebral ischemia; middle cerebral artery occlusion; Neurochemistry; Neurokemi;

    Sammanfattning : Sex steroids in general and estrogens in particular – in addition to their effects on the reproductive organs – affect a large number of crucial bodily functions, including “higher” brain functions.Neuropeptides constitute the phylogenetically oldest neurotransmitter system and are currently thought to act mainly during stress, disease or injury. 4. 14. Estrogen and Serotonin – old dogs, new tricks, Implications for pancreatic beta-cell function

    Författare :Alexander Balhuizen; Celiaki och diabetes; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Diabetes; Estrogen; Serotonin; Pancreatic islets; Insulin resistance; Beta-cell function; GPCR;

    Sammanfattning : Islet hormone secretion is tightly regulated by metabolic status as well as local and circulating factors. These factors can activate different receptors on the pancreatic islet cells, for instance G-protein coupled receptors (GPCRs). LÄS MER

  5. 15. Genetics of Parkinson's disease - with focus on genes of relevance for inflammation and dopamine neruon development

    Författare :Anna Zettergren; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Nyckelord :Parkinson s disease; genetics; inflammation; single nucleotide polymorphism; dopamine neuron development; estrogen; gene; age of onset; Pitx3; estrogen receptor beta; interleukin 6;

    Sammanfattning : Abstract GENETICS OF PARKINSON’S DISEASE - WITH FOCUS ON GENES OF RELEVANCE FOR INFLAMMATION AND DOPAMINE NEURON DEVELOPMENT Introduction: The risk to be affected by Parkinson’s disease (PD) is considered to be influenced by genetic factors. In some rare cases of familial PD, mutations in some specific genes are known to cause the disease, but in the more common sporadic form of PD the causes are probably environmental factors interacting with genetic vulnerability.
