  1. 6. Sex differences in immune response and sex hormone receptor expression in healthy individuals and during viral infection

    Författare :Peik M. A. Brundin; Anders F. Johansson; Ivan Nalvarte; Carl-Johan Treutiger; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Immunology; immune response; menstrual cycle; puumala virus; hantavirus; torque teno virus; sex hormones; sex hormone receptors; estrogen receptors; estrogen receptor beta2; sex differences; microbiome; virome; endocrinology; peripheral blood mononuclear cells; qPCR; Infectious Diseases; infektionssjukdomar; medicinsk virologi; Medical Virology; immunologi; Immunology; Medical Cell Biology; medicinsk cellbiologi; molekylärbiologi; Molecular Biology; Medicine; medicin; obstetrik och gynekologi; Obstetrics and Gynaecology;

    Sammanfattning : There is sex-bias in morbidity and mortality from infectious diseases. Infections kill more men than women and several studies have pointed out differences in the immune system as a reason. The sex hormones estrogen, progesterone and testosterone all shape the effect of the immune response on multiple levels. LÄS MER

  2. 7. The estrogen receptor in fish and effects of synthetic estrogens in the environment - Ecological and evolutionary perspectives and societal awareness

    Författare :Lina Nikoleris; Biodiversitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; the estrogen receptor; salmon evolution and ecology; contraceptives; information gaps; synthetic hormones; EE2; Atlantic salmon Salmo salar ; brown trout Salmo trutta ; roach Rutilus rutilus ;

    Sammanfattning : Synthetic hormones are a group of pharmaceuticals used for various human and animal treatments. However, consumption and disposal of these substances have also given rise to negative effects and environmental problems for organisms in the wild which is why these substances have been classified as estrogenic endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs). 3. 8. Regulation of Injury Induced Schwann Cell Proliferation Schwann Cell Proliferation

    Författare :Åsa Fex Svenningsen; Biologiska institutionen; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; estrogen; signal transduction; insulin like growth-factors; Schwann cell; peripheral; nerve regeneration; Djurfysiologi; Animal physiology; progesterone;

    Sammanfattning : The purpose of this study was to investigate injury induced proliferation of Schwann cells with emphasis of the effects of the insulin-like growth factors (IGF-I and IGF-II) and the sex hormones progesterone and estrogen. Proliferation, measured as [3H] thymidine incorporation, was studied in cultured segments of the rat sciatic nerve or through the use of the thymidine analogue bromo- deoxy-uridine (BrdU) in combination with immunocytochemistry. 4. 9. Is it Just the Hormones? : Sex Steroids, Chronic Stress and Violence in Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder

    Författare :Birgitta Segebladh; Inger Sundström-Poromaa; Marie Bixo; Kristina Gemzell-Danielsson; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; premenstrual dysphoric disorder; combined oral contraceptive; GnRH agonist; add-back; estradiol; progesterone; chronic stress; intimate partner violence; depression; anxiety; allopregnanolone; Obstetrics and gynaecology; Obstetrik och gynekologi; Obstetrik och gynekologi; Obstetrics and Gynaecology;

    Sammanfattning : Premenstrual depressive symptoms and mood swings affect 3-8% of women in fertile age. The female hormones are believed to be the cause. Progesterone is well studied, but estrogen is not, and either are other causes such as intimate partner violence and chronic stress. LÄS MER

  5. 10. Hormonal Regulation of Neural Stem Cell Proliferation and Fate Determination

    Författare :Karin Brännvall; Dan Lindholm; Sandra Ceccatelli; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Neurosciences; Neural stem cell; Proliferation; Fate determination; Hormones; Anabolic androgenic steroids; Neurovetenskap; Neurology; Neurologi;

    Sammanfattning : Stem cells have the capacity for both self renewal, and to form all cell types in the body. Interestingly, so called neural stem cells (NSCs) are found in the adult human brain, which is of significance both out of a developmental perspective and from a clinical point of view. LÄS MER
