1. Effects of sex steroids and tamoxifen on VEGF in the breast
Sammanfattning : Sex steroid exposure constitutes a risk factor for breast cancer, but little is known about the effects of sex steroids on factors mediating angiogenesis, the development of new blood vessels, in normal and malignant breast tissue. In this thesis we have investigated the effects of estradiol, progesterone, and the nonsteroidal anti-estrogen tamoxifen on vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and its receptors (VEGFR-1 and VEGFR-2) in normal human breast tissue, endothelial cells, and breast cancer. 2. Sex steroids, IGF-I, and vascular morphology from birth to adulthood in individuals born small for gestational age
Sammanfattning : Abstract Aim: To study whether there is an association between size at birth, sex steroids, IGF-I, and retinal vascular morphology. Patients and methods: Two different cohorts were studied. In paper I, 25 young adult men born small for gestational age (SGA) were compared to 44 young adult men born appropriate for gestational age (AGA). LÄS MER
3. Sex Differences in Cardiac and Cerebral Damage after Hypovolemic Cardiac Arrest
Sammanfattning : Resuscitation from haemorrhagic shock and the subsequent circulatory arrest remains a major clinical challenge in the care of trauma patients. Numerous experimental studies in sexually mature animals have shown a gender dimorphism in response to trauma and haemorrhagic shock. LÄS MER
4. Hormones and fluid balance during pregnancy, labor and post partum
Sammanfattning : The aim of this thesis was to determine any association between plasma oxytocin and vasopressin concentrations and renal water and sodium excretion during normal pregnancy. In addition to investigate changes in concentrations of estradiol, progesterone, oxytocin, cortisol, and glucose in the blood before and in the nearest hours after delivery and if treatment with oxytocin affected these concentrations and the fluid balance during the different stages of labour. 5. Ovarian hormones and effects in the brain : studies of neurosteroid sensitivity, serotonin transporter and serotonin2A receptor binding in reproductive and postmenopausal women
Sammanfattning : Background: Estrogen has been reported to enhance well-being and quality of life during the climacteric phase. In women with an intact uterus estrogen treatment is always combined with progestins in order to protect the endometrium from hyperplasia and malignancies. LÄS MER
